RegO ® Field Topics

Regulator Vents

Field Topics are intended to provide useful information to the network of authorized LP-Gas
and Anhydrous Ammonia distributors regarding the proper use of RegO® products.
Warning Bulletins covering many of the hazards involved are available from RegO for more
detailed information. These bulletins can be found in our L-500, L-102 and NH3-102
catalogs. Neither the Field Topic or the Warning Bulletins are intended to conflict with
federal, state, or local ordinances and/or regulations, which should be observed at all times.
This information also is not intended to be a substitute for or to supplement any training in
the safe handling and use of propane and related equipment, as required by any applicable
law. By providing this material, ECI assumes no responsibility for providing any such
training. Only individuals properly trained in the safe handling and use of propane and
related equipment should be permitted to do so, and by providing this information, ECI does
not assume responsibility for providing such training.

For more information on LP Gas system requirements, refer to Liquefied Petroleum Gas
Code (NFPA 58), National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54), National Propane Gas Association
Safety Handbook, the RegO LP-Gas Serviceman's Manual L-545, RegO catalogs L-500/L-
102/NH3-102, ANSI K61.1 Safety Requirements for Storage and Handling of Anhydrous
Ammonia, as well as any applicable local codes and ordinances.

Regulator Vents

Regulator vents must always be clear and fully open. If properly installed in accordance
with NFPA 58, RegO regulators that are equipped with a pressure relief valve will
discharge to the atmosphere through the vent, when overpressure conditions exist. Ice,
snow drifts, dirt, bugs, paint, or other foreign materials can clog regulator vents. An
obstructed vent may prevent the pressure relief valve from properly operating. Regulators
should be installed with the vent facing down or protected so that their operation will not
be affected by such elements.

Screened vents must be checked to verify that the screen is in place at all times. If a vent
is clogged or missing, we recommend that you clean the vent and/or replace the screen.
Should there be evidence of foreign material inside the vent, the regulator should be
replaced.

For applications where the regulator employs a vent discharge pipe/tube, check that it is
installed with the outlet facing down and protected with a RegO vent screen.
Acceptable Vent Materials (per NFPA-58)
Metal piping, metal tubing, and/or PVC meeting the requirements of UL 651, or flexible
pipe meeting the requirements of UL 1660 are acceptable vent material. Some examples
are as follows: black or galvanized iron, copper piping, copper tubing, PVC conduit that
meets the requirements of UL 651 and flexible tubing meeting the requirements of UL
1660.

RegO Vent Kits

The LV960 series flexible vent kits are available in 4’, 6’ and 10’ lengths. This kit can
accommodate custom installations with reusable ends and tubing that can be cut to a
desired length.

How far should a regulator be vented?

What is the minimum vent diameter?

The vent diameter must be equal to or greater than the diameter of the regulator vent
outlet. For the LV4403 & LV5503 series regulator that would be equal to 3/4” FNPT. For
the LV3403 series regulator, the vent diameter would be equal to 3/8” FNPT.
How do I properly secure a RegO vent screen?
The LV960-8R1 vent terminations are available and easily secure the
vent screen in place.

Re-cap of the necessary steps for venting:

1. The regulator must be installed with the vent facing down or under cover. Do not
remove the bonnet from the regulator. Regulators can be ordered with various
vent orientations.

2. When removing the vent screen from the regulator vent opening, reinstall it at the
end of the vent termination.

3. The regulator vent termination must be installed at least 12-18 inches above the
ground. In some applications this distance may exceed 6 feet to exceed snow
accumulation.
