Deflection test
Object :
Using deflection of beams methods to determine the materials modulus of elasticity E
for two different materials (Steel and Brass).
Figure 1
2
Theory and used equations :
The main equation is the following and we will provide final expressions for the
maximum slope and deflection for the simply supported and the cantilever beam and
only derive the over hanged simply supported beam:
Main equation: d^2y/dx^2=MEI
For the simply supported made of steel (E should be in the range of 200Gpa)
For the test we plot the date and find E experimentally ( using the slope of the
data) and theoretically instantly.

With :
I =0.4518 x 10^-9
L=800 mm B=25.1 mm h=6mm m^4

Making the general slope = 0.1295 x 10^-3 Now using E = L^3 /
48*(SLOPE)*I
we find that Eexperimental = 182.3 Gpa. Very good

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the Cantilever beam made of brass with l,d and b respectively: 505, 25 , 6 mm
Weight Deflection SLOPE E2 Angle
W Y Y/W
(N) (mm) (mm/N) (Gpa) (Degrees)

2 1.65 0.825 115.634 0.2808
3 2.61 0.87 109.653 0.444
4 3.55 0.8875 107.5 0.604
5 4.605 0.921 103.58 0.7837

y = 0.927x - 0.114

0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Which gives a general slope of 0.927 x 10^-3

Now using Eexperimental = L^3/3*I(SLOPE)
Eexperimental =102.91 Gpa . Very good
Now for the double simply supported over hanging beam with same I
of the last beam and a = 28.8 cm and L = 800 mm b, h an I
respectively: 25.1, 6 and 0.4518 x 10 ^-9 m^4

(N) (mm) (mm/N) (Gpa) (Degrees)

Which gives us a general slope of 0.0106 x 10^-3
So Eexperimental = al^2 /8I *(SLOPE) = 4811 Gpa I tried to recalculate many times and the
same unexpected results keeps coming.
