CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO SIWES

Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was designed with the
responsibility of promoting and encouraging the acquisition of skills in industry and
commerce with the view of generating a pool of trained indigenous man power
sufficient to meet the needs of the economy. The most important asset of any
industrial organization depends on the technical competence of its manpower for the
operation and maintenance of its non-human assets and resources, hence, the need for
SIWES.

SIWES was established by ITF in 1973 to solve the problem of lack of adequate
practical skills preparatory for employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of
tertiary institutions. The Scheme exposes students to industry based skills necessary
for a smooth transition from the classroom to the world of work. It affords students of
tertiary institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the needed
experience in handling machinery and equipment which are usually not available in
the educational institutions.

Participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre- condition for the award of
Diploma and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher
learning in the country, in accordance with the education policy of government.
Operators – The ITF, the coordinating agencies (NUC, NCCE, NBTE), employers of
labour and the institutions. Funding – The Federal Government of Nigeria.

Beneficiaries – Undergraduate students of the following: Agriculture, Engineering,

Technology, Environmental, Science, Education, Medical Science and Pure and
Applied Sciences.

1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

The operational standards and guides for the program is such that students are
posted to an organized establishment, either private or public, where activities of such
organization are relevant to the student’s course of study. At various levels, the

6
students are meant to undergo this period of training to enable them relate the
theoretical knowledge taught in school to the practicality outside there.

This report is aimed at providing detailed records of activities carried out during the
industrial training with a view to assessing the relevance of SIWES to field. The aim
of SIWES is to expose student to the working environment that are peculiar to each of
their different professions outside the lecture rooms in order that they may acquire
practical experience that would be of immense benefit to them in the nearest future
when they begin to practice these professions.

1.2 Objectives

 To examine the correlation between the theoretical and practical aspects of the
profession.

 To provide the opportunities for students to apply their theoretical knowledge in

real work practice

 To prepare students for industrial work situations after graduation.

 To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment.

 To bridge the gap between the classroom work and the real world.

 To examine the contributions of the student to the development of the unit and
the organization as a whole.

1.3 THE SIWES

The Engineering discipline is practical in nature and mainly hinged on experience.

Hence there is great need for any student aspiring to be a professional
engineer to have some form of work experience while studying at school,
in a reputable engineering firm related to his/her course of study. Students
Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is in accordance with the federal
government policy of technical education to enable students to be exposed to the
working experience in industries and to enable them to be useful to
their employers practically and not theoretically alone. The Student’s Industrial
Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) gives students the opportunity to gain
some relevant experience before leaving the campus. The experience gotten by

7
the students during the SIWES program would enable them quickly fit into the
industry upon graduation.

ACQUISITION OF COMPUTER SKILLS

2.1 Introduction

During my Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) program, I had the
opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in various computer skills. This chapter
provides a detailed account of my learning experience in typing on a computer
system, introduction to the World Wide Web, working with HTML and CSS, and
using Corel Draw.

2.2 Typing on a Computer System

At the beginning of my SIWES program, I was introduced to the basics of typing on a

computer system. I learned the correct hand positioning on the keyboard, ensuring
that my wrists remained straight while my fingers rested naturally over the keys.
Proper posture was emphasized, including sitting upright and maintaining a
comfortable distance from the screen to reduce strain.

To improve my typing speed and accuracy, I engaged in daily exercises using typing
software and online platforms. These exercises focused on finger placement, key
recognition, and muscle memory. Over time, I transitioned from looking at the
keyboard while typing to touch typing, which significantly increased my efficiency. I
also practiced using keyboard shortcuts to enhance my workflow, allowing me to
complete tasks faster while minimizing reliance on the mouse.

Additionally, I worked on improving my typing accuracy by focusing on minimizing

errors rather than just increasing speed. Spell-checking tools in Microsoft Word
helped identify and correct common mistakes, and I learned to proofread documents
carefully before submitting them. Consistent practice and real-world applications,
such as typing reports, emails, and presentations, helped me refine my skills.

By the end of my industrial training, my typing speed had improved significantly, and
I was able to complete tasks more efficiently. The ability to type quickly and
accurately is essential in data entry, documentation, and professional communication,
making it one of the most valuable competencies I developed during the program.

where I gained insights into its history and impact on modern communication and
information access. I learned that the World Wide Web is a system of interlinked web
pages and multimedia content, accessible through the internet using web browsers.
This technology has revolutionized various aspects of daily life, including education,
business, and entertainment, by making vast amounts of information readily available
at the click of a button.

During my training, I worked extensively with web browsers such as Google Chrome
and Mozilla Firefox to access and navigate websites. I practiced entering URLs in the
address bar, using search engines to find relevant information, and utilizing browser
features like bookmarks and history to manage my online activities efficiently. One of
the practical tasks I performed was researching information for reports and
presentations, where I had to verify the credibility of online sources to ensure
accuracy and reliability.

Online safety and security were also key aspects of my learning experience. I was
introduced to common cyber threats, including phishing scams and malware, and
learned how to recognize suspicious emails and websites. One of the practical
exercises involved identifying phishing attempts in simulated email messages, where I
had to analyze links, sender addresses, and content for red flags. I also learned the
importance of using strong passwords and enabling two-factor authentication to
protect personal and professional data.

Throughout my training, I applied my knowledge of the World Wide Web in real-

world scenarios, such as registering for online courses, submitting assignments via
cloud platforms, and collaborating with colleagues through web-based
communication tools. These experiences helped me understand the critical role the
internet plays in both academic and professional settings, while also reinforcing the
importance of responsible and secure online practices.

2.4 Working with HTML and CSS During My SIWES Program

One of the most valuable skills I gained during my SIWES (Students Industrial Work
Experience Scheme) program was working with HTML (Hypertext Markup

10
Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). These technologies form the backbone
of web development, allowing the creation and styling of web pages. Through hands-
on practice, I became familiar with structuring web pages using HTML and enhancing
their appearance using CSS.

Building a Basic Web Page with HTML

I started by learning the fundamental structure of an HTML document. HTML

provides the basic framework of a webpage, using elements such as headings,
paragraphs, images, links, and tables. Here is a simple HTML code snippet I practiced
with:

By linking this CSS file to my HTML document, I was able to see significant
improvements in the layout and design of my web pages. The page background
changed, text and table styling were improved, and the hyperlink was styled to look
more like a button.

Key Takeaways from My Learning

Through practical exercises, I learned how HTML structures content while CSS
enhances its appearance. Experimenting with different layouts, colors, and styles
helped me understand the importance of a well-designed webpage. By the end of my
SIWES program, I was able to build functional and visually appealing web pages
using a combination of HTML and CSS.

graphics editor widely used for creating professional designs, including logos, icons,
and various graphical elements. This software provided me with a new perspective on
digital design, allowing me to experiment with different tools and techniques to create
visually appealing graphics.

My learning process began with understanding the CorelDRAW workspace, including

the toolbar, property bar, and object manager. I explored the use of basic shapes such
as rectangles, circles, and polygons, learning how to manipulate their sizes, colors,
and outlines to create structured designs. One of my first tasks was to draw simple
objects and modify them using tools like the Shape Tool, which allowed me to adjust
the nodes and curves for more customized designs.

As I became more comfortable with the software, I practiced combining shapes and
adding text to create logos and icons. I experimented with different fonts, color
gradients, and effects such as transparency and drop shadows to enhance the overall
visual appeal of my designs. Using the PowerClip feature, I was able to insert images
and patterns within objects, giving my graphics a more dynamic look.

One of the most exciting aspects of working with CorelDRAW was learning how to
trace and vectorize images. I used the Bitmap Tracing tool to convert raster images
into editable vector graphics, which helped me refine logos and create clean, scalable
designs. By utilizing layers, I was able to organize my work efficiently, keeping
different elements separate for easy adjustments.

14
Through continuous practice, I gained confidence in using CorelDRAW to create
professional-quality graphics. The ability to manipulate shapes, colors, and text with
precision allowed me to bring my creative ideas to life. By the end of my training, I
