Q13. Assertion: Classification is necessary to study all living organisms. 1
Reason: Individuals are grouped into categories in classification.
Q14. Assertion: Aerenchyma help in buoyancy to hydrophyte plants. 1
Reason: The large air chambers are present in aerenchyma.
Q15. Assertion: Cell growth is a continuous process in terms of cytoplasmic increase. 1
Reason: DNA synthesis occurs only during two specific stages in the cell cycle.
Q16. Assertion: Due to environment, the difference in shapes of leaves produced in air and 1
those produced in water in buttercup represent the heterophyllous development.
Reason: The phenomenon of heterophylly is an example of plasticity.

Q29. Akshita who is a biology tutor was teaching photosystems to the students at her place. While 4
explaining the topic light reaction said that, ‘‘Two of the three products of light reaction,
ATP and NADPH are used to drive the reactions in the biosynthetic/dark phase.’’ It has been
verified by the fact that immediately after light becomes unavailable, the biosynthetic phase
continues for some time and then stops; if light becomes available again, the process
continues. Her brother, student of class XI was also listening the same and was remembering
that he had listened the same from his biology teacher also. He interrupted her sister and
asked her to re-explain the whole process for the better understanding.
(i)
(ii)Can we say that calling the biosynthetic phase-dark reaction is a misnomer? Justify.
Q30. The PNS is divided into two divisions called somatic neural system and autonomic neural 4
system. The somatic neural system relays impulses from the CNS to skeletal muscles while
the autonomic neural system transmits impulses from the CNS to the involuntary organs and
smooth muscles of the body. The autonomic neural system is further classified into
sympathetic neural system and parasympathetic neural system. The brain is the central
information processing organ of our body, and acts as the ‘command and control system’. It
controls the voluntary movements, balance of the body, functioning of vital involuntary
organs, thermoregulation, hunger and thirst, circadian rhythms of our body, activities of
several endocrine glands and human behavior. It is also the site for processing of vision,
hearing, speech, memory, intelligence, emotions and thoughts. The human brain is well
protected by the skull. Inside the skull, the brain is covered by cranial meninges consisting
of an outer layer called dura mater, a very thin middle layer called arachnoid and an inner
layer (which is in contact with the brain tissue) called pia mater. The brain can be divided
into three major parts: forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.
(i)Explain the mechanism of generation of action potential.
(ii)Label the diagram- 1,2,3,4,5,6-
