What is Aeronautical and Aerospace
Engineering?
Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering is a branch of engineering that studies the
design and construction of aircraft and spacecraft and the equipment they require. It
covers the areas of aeronautical engineering, related to the design of systems that fly
in the atmosphere, and space engineering, the latter being understood as that which
deals with the design of propulsion vehicles and devices that will be placed in outer
space.
There are two main areas within this Engineering: Aeronautics and Space or
Astronautics.
Aeronautical Engineering
Aeronautical engineering is responsible for the design, maintenance and
commissioning of all types of aircraft: commercial, passenger and military aircraft,
helicopters, seaplanes, etc. Its engineers are also responsible for inspecting materials
and controlling quality during the design process, as well as their maintenance.
Aerospace Engineering
Aerospace engineering is responsible for the design of propulsion vehicles and devices
that are operated in space such as shuttles, rockets or satellites.
Functions of the Aeronautical Engineer
Graduates of this engineering course acquire the skills to:
To design, manufacture, operate and maintain, within the scope of their
respective aeronautical engineering specialty and in accordance with the
knowledge acquired, aerospace vehicles (aircraft and space vehicles),
propulsion systems and aerospace engines, aerospace materials, airport
infrastructures, air navigation infrastructures and any air transport and air traffic
management system.
Carry out activities of projection, technical direction, appraisal, certification,
drafting of reports, opinions, and technical advice in tasks related to
Aeronautical Technical Engineering, exercise of functions and genuinely
aerospace technical positions.
Analyze and assess the social and environmental impact of technical solutions.
They will have sufficient basic training to be able to continue national or
international postgraduate and Master's studies and, more specifically, this
qualification will give access to the Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
What profile should an Aeronautical Engineer
have?
The profile required for this profession is mostly analytical and practical.
Mathematics and Physics are very demanding subjects, so having solid knowledge
in these two areas is imperative.
Having a good level of written and spoken English is important for easily
understanding certain concepts and subjects and, of course, for ensuring a successful
professional career abroad, if necessary.
This engineering, like any discipline, requires perseverance and hours of daily study,
class attendance and a participative and proactive attitude.
Of course, it is essential to have an interest in technology, how airplanes work,
and everything related to space, aviation, air transport, and aeronautics in
general.
It is essential that the aeronautical engineer has a highly developed logical reasoning
and is able to easily assimilate technical concepts.
These capabilities must be complemented with imagination and creativity and a
series of transversal skills linked to organization, management and direction.
