ClipGain user guide

ClipGain is a tool that provides powerful and direct control over the currently selected clip’s
settings, by bringing the controls right under the mouse’s current position and/or from custom
shortcuts without the need to reach for the detailed clip view. It’s doing way more than controlling
a clip’s gain and pitch settings.
It works with Audio and Midi clips.
It works in Session and Arrangement.
The feature set adapts automatically depending on the Clip’s type and current View.

Your ClipGain download comes with 2 devices:

- the good ol’ (but updated… and not ugly anymore thanks to ELPHNT) ClipGain.
Most of you will probably only ever use this version.
- ClipGain Mira: this version is « Mira-enabled » which means that it can be controlled from any
smartphone/tablet or even a web browser. This one has the extra Mira support, but it can be
used just like the regular version too. You don’t need a Mira license/app to use it, there’s
instructions in the device. For more info, go check https://cycling74.com/

ClipGain has 2 windows:

The main window, which is used

to create shortcuts by key/midi mapping
its buttons. You don’t use it by clicking the
buttons with the mouse, it’s specifically designed
for key/midi mappings. Its most important button
probably is the « Floating Window » one.

The oating window.

This floating window is specifically designed
for mouse use only (the option to map its
parameters is bypassed).
A clip provides different options
in Session and Arrangement view, and
ClipGain’s floating window reflects this by adapting
its appearance.

Many parameters in the main and floating windows are identical, and/or complementary. This lets
you combine different workflows, whether the situation calls for editing e.g the clip’s gain with the
mouse on the fader, or with a shortcut that boosts or attenuate it by a user-customisable amount.

Some parameters in the oating window are for audio clips only, others also work with midi clips.
On the main window, Crop also works with midi clips, and Duplicate is midi clips-only.

Mouse over a button and a popup window will give you hints about each button’s purpose (or
check Live’s Info view/panel). Most should be straightforward as they reflect the clip’s properties
that you already know. But here’s some info:

mode to its
own shortcut.
Crop: crops the clip to the length set by
its (loop) start/end markers in the clip
editor only (i.e it doesn’t crop clips on the
Arrangement timeline).
As of L11.3.20 it’s also working with audio
Duplicate works only on midi clips. clips!
It’s exactly like the Duplicate button
in a midi clip’s editor… but
mappable, indeed!

How to:

Place the device on your Master track. It doesn’t affect audio which just passes through.
⁃ Key and/or midi map the « oating window » button.
⁃ Map the e.g « Warp » button. This will not open any window, but simply un/warp the
selected clip.
⁃ Map any button that you need a shortcut for.

When your mappings are done I recommend to save this as part of your Default Set so you won’t
have to repeat these steps anymore.

⁃ Select an audio clip, press your « oating window » shortcut. This will open the floating
window, under your mouse, with the clip’s gain/transpose fader/knob etc parameters
accessible right away.
⁃ You can either close the pop-up window(s) by pressing your shortcut again or leave it
where it is. Every new selected audio clip will declare its parameters values to the pop-up
window(s) and will be editable instantly.
⁃ Enjoy
⁃ Spread the word, and rate the device on my Gumroad if you’re feeling so inclined: https://

⁃ take care

Release notes:

v2.2:
- fixes an Undo issue

v2.1:
- floating window opening optimization
- Few colors tweaks to ensure compatibility with L12 Themes

v2.0:
- New GUI, thanks to ELPHNT, the one and only.
- Crop can crop audio clips too (as of L11.3.20)
- added clip's Launch mode, Launch Legato, launch quantization, RAM mode, clip mute, duplicate midi clip length.
- Everything has been collected into a single floating window
- Fixed the Rex/Pro warp mode selection bug

v1.7:
New key/midi mappable shortcuts to select individual Warp modes.

v1.6:
It wasn’t possible to select the ComplexPro Warp mode

v1.5:
- new "quick edit shortcuts" : key/midi mappable buttons used to increment/decrement the clip's gain/pitch by the
chosen amount.
(The increment/decrement gain value isn't exact with the Clip Gain's values below 0dB. For example a 1dB decrement
below 0dB will not results in -1dB but in -1.18dB. That's because of the weird and non-linear curve Live is using to scale
the clip's gain. I might fix this later on, or maybe Ableton will do it quicker than me. In any case, that really isn't a big
deal, sound-wise.)

v1.4:
- reduced CPU usage by stoping mouse position tracking when floating window isn't displayed.
- warp mode selector was blocking Live's Undo history. It's also now shown as inactive (and can't be tweaked) when the
selected clip is not warped.
- new "warp" button to un/warp from the Pitch window (for mouse only i.e not mappable)

v1.3:
- CROP can now crop midi clips (only)
- you can now change the Warp Mode (in the Pitch window). Audio clip only.

v1.2.2:
- double click the gain fader now resets it to 0dB.
- you can't midi map the clip gain/transpose anymore. This removes extra undo steps (and it's anyway better to midi
map these directly from within Live).
- the un/warp button was blocking Live's undo history.
- some patch clean up (you might need to remap the buttons, sorry…)

v1.2.1:
- stretching a warped clip from Arrangement was slown down because of ClipGain.
- make sure pressing "WARP" doesn't do anything when no clip is selected

v1.2:
- Gain and Pitch can now be opened together with a single shortcut
- new WARP button that un/warps the selected clip
- after a clip was unselected by clicking in an empty area, moving the fader/knob would still change the last clip's
values. This is now fixed.
- colour tweaks
v1.1:
- added new Pitch window for audio clip transposition
- gain and transpose are always observed so you don't need to close and re-open the windows for the values to be
updated. It also means that you can keep the windows open all the time if you want.
