Functions and Models: Function Domain Range Function Domain Range

Chapter 1.1 introduces the concept of functions, defining them as a correspondence between a domain (inputs) and a range (outputs), with independent and dependent variables. It discusses the vertical line test for determining if a graph represents a function and introduces function notation. Additionally, it presents mathematical models and examples, including how to align data and evaluate functions at specific points.

Chapter 1.

1
Functions and Models

A function is a rule of correspondence that assigns to each element of one set (called the domain)
exactly one element of a second set (called the range).

A function can be defined by a set of ordered pairs, a table, graph, equation, or verbal description.

The Domain is the inputs of the function. (x)

The Range is the outputs of the function (y)

Therefore:

x represents any element in the domain and is called the independent variable

y represents any element in the range and is called the dependent variable

1
Find the domain of the function:

y = √4x − 8

x
y=
√x − 4

3
y = √x + 1 + 3x 5

2
y=
15 − x

Tests for Functions

Vertical Line Test: (Do Additional Examples on the Board)

A set of points in a coordinate plane is the graph of a function if and only if no vertical line
intersects the graph in more than one point.

Is P a function of x?

Why?

Is x a function of P?

Why?

3
Function Notation:

y = f (x) means that variable y is a function of variable x

f (x) = 4x2 − 2x +3

Find the following:

f (3) =

f (−1) =

Figure 1.14 shows the graph of f (x) = 2x3 + 5x2 − 28x – 15

Use the points shown on the graph to find f (−2) and f (4)

Use the equation to find f (−2) and f (4)

4
Mathematical Model: is a functional relationship that includes not only the function rule but also
descriptions of all involved variables and their units of measure.

Example: F =9/5*C+35 where F = Fahrenheit and C = Celsius

Aligning Data

Something to pay very close attention to in problem descriptions.

Example:

Public healthcare expenditures for the period 1990 - 2012 can be modeled by the function
E(t) = 738.1(1.065)t, where E(t) is in billions of dollars and t is the number of years after 1990.

What value of t represents 2010?

Approximate the public health care expenditure for 2010.

Review Questions:

Does Table A describe x as a function of y? Why or why not?

Does Table A describe y as a function of x? Why or why not?

Does Table B describe x as a function of y? Why or why not?

Does Table B describe y as a function of x? Why or why not?

5
5) If R(x) = 5x + 8, find R(-3), R(-1), and R(2).

6)

7)

8) If a model has inputs aligned so that x = the number of years after 2000, what inputs would be
used to represent 2015 and 3457?
