Cognitivism
Is a psychological and educational theory that focuses on understanding how people
think, learn, and process information? It emphasizes internal mental processes, such as
perception, memory, problem-solving, and reasoning, rather than just observable
behaviors (as in behaviorism). Cognitivist views the mind as an active processor of
information, often likened to a computer.
Key Principles of Cognitivism
1. Learning as an Internal Process:
Learning involves acquiring, organizing, and storing knowledge in the brain.
It is not just a response to external stimuli but involves understanding and
interpreting information.
2. Mental Structures:
Concepts like schemas (mental frameworks) help people organize and
interpret information. Learning often involves modifying or building new
schemas.
3. Focus on Problem-Solving:
Cognitivism emphasizes how individuals analyze, evaluate, and solve
problems using mental strategies.
4. Importance of Memory:
Memory plays a critical role in learning, with distinctions between short-term
memory, long-term memory, and working memory.
5. Active Learners:
People are seen as active participants in their learning process, not passive
recipients.
Examples in Education:
1. Using mnemonic devices to enhance memory. Breaking information into chunks
(chunking) to reduce cognitive load.
2. Encouraging metacognition (thinking about one's own thinking) to improve problem-
solving.
Notable Theorists:
A. Jean Piaget:
Known for his theory of cognitive development, which explains how thinking evolves
across different stages of childhood.
B. Lev Vygotsky:
Emphasized the social context of learning and introduced the concept of the Zone of
Proximal Development (ZPD).
C. Jerome Bruner:
Advocated for discovery learning and scaffolding to support understanding.
Cognitivism has applications in education, artificial intelligence, therapy, and other fields where
understanding human thought processes is essential.
