key to choose the appropriate answer.
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.

shapes of spines.
REASON: In deserts only little water is available.
(b)Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Q10. ASSERTION: Some abiotic factors like air, water, light and heat are very important for growth
of plants.
REASON: Some of the above abiotic factors are important for all living organisms
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Q11. ASSERTION: Any animal which adapts itself against heat and water scarcity is well suited for
desert conditions.
REASON: In deserts only little water is available.
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Q12. ASSERTION: Adaptation is a method by which organisms get well adjusted to their
surroundings
REASON: Adaptation does not take place in short time
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Q13. ASSERTION: Respiration is necessary for animals

(b)Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
Q14. ASSERTION: Polar bear has padded feet while the yak has sharp hooves and horns
REASON: The adaptation helps the animals to protect themselves from cold temperature, snow
and chilly winds

(c) A is true but R is false.

Very short questions

Q15. Animals like mountain goat and snow leopards do not fall or slip Why?
These animals have big and padded feet and strong hooves to spread their weight which prevent
them from slipping and falling on the mountain.
Q16. Leaves of mountain trees prevent damage by snow or rain. Why?
The needle like leaves of these trees have a thick waxy layer called cuticle which protects the leaves
from any kind of damage.
Q17. Lions have very high agility. Why do they need this type of adaptation?
As a predator they have to hunt for food which is not easy as their prey like deer are very fast, thus
they have high agility.
Q18. Growth is an important characteristic of living beings. Support the statement.
Growth represents increase in weight and size of living beings as time passes. Non-living things do
not grow over the time.
Short answers type questions
Q19.Why is reproduction important for organisms?
Reproduction is important for organisms as it leads to the production of more individuals of their
own kind. This helps in continuity of life on earth.
Q20. A habitat is said to have two important components. What are they?
1) A living component which is called as biotic
2) Non living component called abiotic.
Q21. Why do desert snakes burrow deep into the sand during the day?
Snake in the desert burrow deep into the sand during thr daytime because the deeper layer of sand
are cooler which allows them to stay away from heat of the desert which persists through the
daytime.
Q22. An animal has a round body, small ears and a thick fur on its body, feet and toes. This animal
has a thick layer of fat beneath its skin for providing insulation. The feet of this animal is also bigger
in size
I) Identify this animal.
The animal is Polar bear
II) Name the possible habitat of this animal
The habitat of this animal is arctic region.
Q23. Explain why mountain trees are cone-shaped having sloping branches?
The trees in the mountain habitat are usually coned shaped having sloping branches because the
shape of the mountain trees makes the rainwater and snow slide off easily without damaging the
branches and leaves.
Q24. What are the specific features present in a deer that helps it to detect the presence of predators
like lions?
1) Long ears to hear movement of predators.
2) Eyes on the side of the head which allow it to look in all directions
Q25. Aquatic plants undergo some modifications to adapt to their habitat. List any two of those.
1) The roots of these plants are small just to keep the plant in place.
2) Stems are hollow with large spaces which help in floating.
Q26. List the types of movements seen in plants.
1) Opening and closing of flower.
2) Growth of stem and leaves.
3) Growth of stem and twigs towards light and roots towards soil and water.
Q27. Read the features of different plants given below
A) Thick waxy stem
B) Short roots
C) Cone-shaped plants
D) Sloping branches
E) Small of spine like leaves
F) Hollow stem
Choose the type of plant for every adaptive feature given in A, B, C, D, E and F from the list given
below:
Aquatic plant, desert plant, mountainous plant
A) Desert plant
B) Aquatic plant
C) Mountainous plant
D) Mountainous plant
E) Desert plant
F) Aquatic plant

Q28. Mention one adaptation present in the following animals.

I) In camels to keep their bodies away from the heat of sand
Camels have long legs to keep their bodies away from the heat of sand.
II) In frogs to enable them to swim
Frogs have webbed feet that enables them to swim
III) In dolphins and whales to breathe in air when they swim near the surface of water.
Dolphins and whales have blow holes which help them to breathe in air when they swim near the
surface of water.

CASE STUDY

Q29 Ravi and Ritu went on a vacation to different places. They went to Rishikesh, Himalayas, Kerala,
Rajasthan. They saw many kinds of trees, plants and animals, e.g. pine trees on Himalayas and cactus
in Rajasthan. All the places were so different from each other. They clicked pictures, collected
samples and showed it to their teacher asking to explain the reason behind these variations.

I) Why is a difference in type of plants growing in different places?

Plants growing in different places appear different due to the presence of unique adaptive
features which can be morphological or physiological in nature.
II) What do you mean by survival place of an organism?
It is called habitat. It provides food, water and shelter to all living organisms
III) How many types of such places that give living organism shelter, food, etc. are you aware
about?
Two types of habitats have been observed:
1) Terrestrial
2) Aquatic
IV) Give an example of variation in plants from different regions.
Leaves of cactus present in desert are either absent or are very small and spiny to reduce water
loss through transpiration. While leaves of trees like deodar are needle shaped to let snow falling
on them slide of easily.

Q30. Riya lives in Delhi. During her vacations, she went to Leh with her parents. They all were fine
on the way. When they reached Leh, all of them started feeling nauseous and complained of
headaches and breathing difficulties. A man travelling with them told them to rest for few days and
everything would be fine. After few days, Riya observed that the man was right and they were feeling
fine.
I) Why was Riya and her family suffering from these symptoms?
Riya and her family was suffering from these symptoms because they were present at high
altitude region where oxygen supply is limited.
II) A) After 2-3 days everybody was fine. Why?
After few days, everybody’s body had adjusted to the conditions of mountain region
B) Define this change that occurred in the family after few days.
Acclimatization is the short time change by which an organism adjusts to changes in its
environment, such as variations in temperature, humidity, altitude, or other environmental factors,
to maintain optimal functioning.
