Read the passage and answer the following questions.
A cheerful positive attitude can work wonders for one’s
personality. Half of our problems can be solved if we face our
problems with a positive attitude.
A person may have all the resources the world can offer, but if
he does not have the right attitude, nothing can help him. If we yearn
for something and due to some reason we do not get it, we should not
panic. We should believe that destiny has something better in store
for us.
A lot of time and energy is wasted due to negative thoughts.
All this can be changed through a change in attitude. Positive thinking helps in keeping the
mind free of unnecessary worries, tensions and fears. It also improves our health.
King Bruce of Ireland learnt his lesson by watching a spider which kept falling off the
wall, but never gave up trying to climb the wall, till at last it reached the top.
Savitri was told that her husband Satyavan was destined to die within a year of their
marriage, but through her determination she defeated the Lord of Death.
It is always wiser to hope than to despair. According to an English proverb,
‘When everything seems lost, the future remains’. Hope provides the best kind of relief. To
lose hope is to lose the war even before it has begun.

Read the passage about a boy who loved animals.
Surya loved animals. He always wanted to be in the company of animals as luck
would have it, he found a job in Shadipur Zoo. From morning 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., he was
busy with the tigers, lions, monkeys, wolves and several birds like peacocks, parrots and the
seagulls.
Surya was supposed to clean the cages with the help of two attendants. Then he would
feed the animals twice a day and supervise the other workers from time to time. His most
important job was to notice signs of illness or disease and to promptly notify the doctor.
During summer, Surya’s
responsibilities increase. He is supposed to
cover the cages with jute sacks and make
them wet, time and again, to give a cooling
effect. The previous summer, the lioness had
four cubs. Surya would feed them very easily
with the help of milk bottles. The lioness
absolutely refused to allow anyone near the
cage except Surya.
Animals immensely love their keepers
and get used to them but accidents do take
place. If animals are emotionally upset due to
the death of a parent or sibling, they become
angry, irritated. Then the keepers’ lives are
often at risk. Once, Surya was cleaning the
cage of a King Cobra, he was taken by
surprise when the cobra spat venom on him.
With the wall behind him Surya could not escape. But the parakeets screamed and made
such a noise that an attendant came to Surya’s rescue. He was immediately hospitalized and
saved. But this incident did not discourage him. After he was discharged, Surya went straight
to meet King Cobra and the doctor told him that on the fateful day, the mighty reptile was
hurt and the painful and infected wound had made him react. Surya smiled lovingly at the
snake, forgetting all his woes.

Nadeem said, “Why, I can do whatever I feel like with its head.” Then saleem realized that

The Cassowary Bird and the Baby Elephant
The baby elephant was not out of place in our
home in north India because India is where
elephants belong. Our house was always full of pets
brought home by grandfather, a forest officer. But
the cassowary bird was different. No one had seen
such a bird before-not in India. Grandfather had
picked it up on a voyage to Singapore. A rubber
planter had gifted it to him.
Anyway, it ended up at our home in
Dehradun and seemed to
do quite well in sub-tropical climate. It looked like a cross between
a turkey and an ostrich, but bigger than the latter. About five feet in
height, it was neither a beautiful bird, nor a friendly one. It had
come to stay with us and everyone was curious about it, especially
the baby elephant.
Right from the start the baby elephant took a great
interest in the cassowary. He would circle round the odd creature
and examine with his trunk the texture of its stumpy wings. The
elephant in his childlike curiosity took liberties which resulted in an
