After completion of this course, the students will be able to:
1. Explain power system structure and regulatory aspects of Power Systems.
2. Calculate transmission line parameters for different conductor configurations and arrangements.
3. Model transmission lines and assess performance factors like regulation and efficiency.
4. Describe underground cables and AC/DC distribution systems with practical applications.
5. Analyze power system transients and propose surge protection methods effectively.
COURSE CONTENT
UNIT I
Fundamentals of Power System
Introduction to Electricity Act, 2003: Definition of “Power Systems”, “Grid”. Structure of power system;
Comparison of DC and AC transmission; Choice of transmission voltage: Introduction to Central
Electricity Authority (CEA); Economic choice of conductor size; per unit system, complex power.
UNIT II
Transmission Line Parameters
Electrical Properties of Transmission Line: DC and AC Resistance, Skin Effect. commonly used
conductor materials for high-voltage transmission lines.
Calculation of inductance: Single-phase two-wire line, Three-Phase Line: Asymmetrical Spacing and
Symmetrical Spacing, Transposition of power lines; Composite conductor and bundled conductor; Line
capacitance of single-phase and three-phase, single circuit and double circuit transmission lines;
Proximity effect.
UNIT III
Performance of Transmission Lines and Overhead Lines
Models of short, medium, and long transmission lines, ABCD parameters; Ferranti effect, regulation, and
efficiency; surge impedance loading, tuned power lines; power flow through a transmission line, power
circle diagrams.
Overhead Lines: Sag, Tension, and clearance; Effect of wind and ice on sag; Dampers. Insulators: Types,
String insulator, String efficiency & methods of its improvement. Corona: Principle of corona formation
and Methods of reduction of corona.
UNIT IV
Underground Cables and Distribution System
Underground Cables: Types of cables, Capacitance of single core and three core cables, Grading,
Dielectric loss, and loss angle. Elements of distribution system – Feeders, Distributor, and Service main;
Primary and secondary distribution system; Radial, ring main and interconnected system
UNIT V
Power System Transient and Surge Protection
Theory of traveling waves; incident and reflected waves; transmission and refraction of waves; velocity
of traveling waves; behaviour of traveling waves for different terminations - inductor, capacitor.
Switching surges; origin and mechanism of lightning strokes; protection from surges – lightning arrestors
and surge diverters.
