My Reflective Story as a Good Performer in A/L Accounting
I did my G.C.E A/L’s in Commerce stream which was my last schooling examination few years
ago. Since I didn’t do commerce in O/L’s, doing A/L commerce was a new challenge to me
especially in terms of the accounting subject. In the process of selecting tutors, I first went to
Nugegoda for a mass class. The first few months seemed to be relaxing until the easy period
was over. Afterwards there came the hard time. Lessons such as accounting for charity bodies,
depreciation provisions, company accounting were harder for students in the middle & low
levels as well. The below paragraphs will describe my conversion to a good accounting
performer according to Gibb’s Reflective Cycle.
 Description: - Apart from doing past papers, I faced 2 mock exams before attaining
good grades. In those exams, my accounting marks were in 40’s & 50’s only. Even
though my econ & business studies marks were in good level, my accounting
performance was not satisfactory. That is, during this time I could score 20’s from the
MCQ paper & maximum 30’s from second paper where I was struggling.
 Feelings: - In order to apply for higher education, passing A/L’s with flying colors is
essential. However, I was scared that perhaps I might fail at the end when my closest
school mates were doing well than me.
 Evaluation: - In my A/L time period, there was one external person having good
expectations about me. He was my econ sir. When I met him, I told my accounting
situation & he motivated me telling that “don’t worry if you are capable of winning two
subjects, why not accounting”? He immediately advised me to change my tutor & go
to another tutor recommended by him which I also got to know who’s having a good
reputation among A/L students. So I changed my classes.
 Analysis: - After attending to my new accounting class & started working according to
the instructions of my tutor, I started improving step by step but not to the desired apex
level. During this stage, I was converting myself from “S” level to “C” level.
 Conclusion: - This new tutor’s class was also a mass class. In the mean time I joined
to a small group class as well which was not that much popular among A/L students. I
got re-transformed in here where I was capable to permanently stop some repeating
errors steps 3 months before A/L’s. Some of those are mentioning SOPL in the income
statement without fully writing as Statement of Profit & Loss & other Comprehensive
income, poor time management to some level as well.
 Action Plan: - By adhering to the feedback of my tutors & according to my personal
experience, I implemented an action plan for accounting & strictly followed it as
follows. Focused more on final provincial papers, segmented the questions of part-2
papers & did separately, allocated a specific shift to do MCQ papers as well. Once the
Econ & BS papers got over, I allocated the whole day to variety of papers where I was
happy about my confidence. On the day the A/L results got released, I was very pleased
that my right decesions & hard work gifted an A pass at last.
