Sarah Crownshaw I pledge my honor Secret Sharer Questions 1.
Select two details that describe the Chief Mate (ex terrible growth of whiskers and two details that describe the Second Mate (ex cub ) and explain what each detail reveals about the character. Chief Mate: He raised sharply his simple face, overcharged by a terrible growth of whisker . The description of having a simple face shows that he is not a man of wealth or great intelligence. He has no striking features to him, except the overgrown beard. The beard shows he is somewhat of a rough man that probably does not care about appearance and probably belongs well on the ship. Second Mate: round cheeked, silent young man . He is the youngest man on the ship and he is referred to multiple times as the young man. It puts emphasis that he is younger than the captain, probably to give the captain some feeling of actual power. He knows about the Sephora when no one else did and with him being the youngest, it is ironic that he knows the most. Grave beyond his years . This shows that he is not youthful in personality. He is very mature and the description of grave suggests he is not as happy and free living as most men his age. 2. How are the captain and Leggatt similar? How are they different? The two men are very similar in physical features. Leggatt is of the same build and is able to wear an identical sleeping suit to the captain. The captain even describes him as if he was looking at himself through a dark shadowy mirror. They are both young as well. Leggatt is about 25 years old, which is around the same age as the captain. Having this in common, they are probably going through the same issues as each other. They went to the same boy s school just years apart, showing they come from the same kind of privileged lifestyle. The Captain says that it was as if they had had the exact same experiences. The captain also makes a comparison that they are both strangers to the ship. He feels that he does not know anyone well on the ship and that Leggatt knows the same as he does about anyone that is working on it. They are different in temperament. When the captain first describes him, it is his voice that stands out. The voice was calm and resolute. A good voice. The self-possession of that man had somehow induced a corresponding state in myself. Leggatt is confidant and strong where the captain is unsure of his surroundings and self-conscious of his abilities. 3. Explain how Captain Archbold serves as a foil to the Captain? Captain Archbold is introduced as a foil to the captain for many reasons. First, his feelings towards Leggatt are opposite to the captains. Archbold says he never liked the man and had the intention of taking him to the mainland and giving him to the law. The captain thinks that because there is so much similar between him and Leggatt, that Archbold would not think of him as chief mate material either. The captain acts very playfully while Archbold is on board, pretending he is deaf and constantly smiling and smirking. Archbold does not know how to react to him and is a very strict man. He is a rule follower where the captain breaks the rules. They have opposite personalities that bring out the captains personality. 4. Fully explain the significance of the title "The Secret Sharer" as it relates to the central meaning of the short story. The title is significant for many different ways. There have been many interpretations of its significance, from the literal meaning to a deeper message. The title appears in the book twice
when talking about Leggatt. He is said to be the secret sharer of his life and his cabin. This is the literal meaning that the captain is holding this fugitive secretly in his cabin because he feels a sort of connection with him. Another literal meaning could be that they actually share their secrets with each other. At one point the captain says he knows he cannot trust any of his ship mate, but shows that he does trust Leggatt by letting him stay aboard. It thought that the title could indicate the shared traits that the two have. With Leggatt being on board, the captain becomes surer of himself, taking characteristics from Leggatt that he thinks a captain should have. He gains a better sense of self through keeping Leggatt a secret and they almost become one person.
