READING
10 Read the text. Complete gaps 1–3 with
sentences A–E. There are two extra sentences.
I stood on the tennis court, feeling a mix of
enthusiasm and fear. 1___ He was tall, with broad
shoulders, short blond hair, and sharp blue eyes
that seemed to see every move before it even
happened. His powerful serve and quick reflexes
made him a very serious rival.
When the match began, I tried to stay calm, but my
nerves were getting the best of me. I kept thinking,
‘How can I beat someone like Lucas?’ 2___ I
noticed that while Lucas was fast and strong, he
was also a bit predictable. I decided to concentrate
on accuracy rather than power, aiming my shots at
the corners where Lucas struggled to reach.
Point by point, my confidence grew. Every time
Lucas sent a powerful shot my way, I returned it
with precision. I started thinking, ‘Maybe I can
actually win this.’ During the final set, I was fully
concentrated, blocking out the crowd's noise and
Lucas's strong presence. When I finally hit the
winning shot and the ball flew past Lucas, I was in
a state of excitement. 3___ I had beaten Lucas
‘The Wall’ Thompson.
As the crowd was cheering me on, I felt both
disbelief and joy. I had doubted myself, but in the
end, I proved that even the strongest opponents
could be defeated with a good strategy and
determination.
A I was wearing my lucky red wristband, hoping it
would give me the confidence needed.
B My opponent, Lucas ‘The Wall’ Thompson, was
one of the best players in our town.
C I had done it.
D Lucas preferred to play close to the net, which
