MCR3U Function Notation
Ms. Kueh
Because functions are used throughout mathematics, function notation, was developed to
make it easier to work with them. Function notation can be used even when we do not know
the details of a particular relationship.
Suppose a function is given. Let ____ denote a given function and let ___ represent the input
value.
____denotes the output value of the function when the input is x . In other words, f (x)= y .
Usually a function is represented by a mathematical expression.
f ( x )= √ x 2 +1 that tell you what to do with
the input value in order to
produce the corresponding
output
of
the function.
Any letter
can be used
The Function Machine:
There are two common points of confusion among many students:
Confusion point 1: f (x) is NOT
Confusion point 2: f (x) altogether means only “ y ” – and it is weird that there are 2 things
representing 1 thing!
Think of it this way:
f ( x )=mx+b
means
f ()=m+ b
2
f ( x )=a x +bx + c
means
2
f ()=a❑ +b+ c
where you can put a number or expression in the box!
Example 1 If f ( x )=2 x +3, find
a) f (6) b) f (−5) c) f (x+ 1) d) f (2 x)
Example 2
Given the graph to the right, find
a) f (2)
b) f (−3)
c) x if f ( x )=2
d) x if f ( x )=0
Example 3 A company rents cars for $ 50 per day plus $ 0.15/km .
a) Express the daily rental cost, C as a function of the number of kilometres, d travelled.
b) Determine the rental cost if you drive 472 km in one day.
c) Determine how far you can drive in a day for $ 80.
d) Is C (d ) a function? Justify your answer.
Example 4 If f ( x )=3 x 2−7 x +2
a) Find f (−4 ) b) Find f (a2 −1)
Example 5 If f ( x )=7−3 x , find in simplest form:
a) f (−a) b) f (a+3) c) f (x+ 2)
Example 6 If f ( x )=2 x 2 +3 x−1, find in simplest form:
a) f (2−x ) b) f ( x 2) c) x if f ( x )=−2
2 x +3
Example 7 If g ( x )=¿ , find
x−4
a) g(2) b) g(0) c) g ( −12 )
d) g(x +2) in simplest form e) x if g ( x )=−3
Thinking
1. On the same set of axes draw the graphs of three different functions f (x) such that
f ( 2 )=1 and f ( 5 )=3.
2. Find f (x)=m x +b , a linear function, in which f ( 2 )=1 and f (−3 )=11.
3. Given T ( x )=a x2 +bx +c , find a , b , and c if T ( 0 )=−4, T ( 1 ) =−2 and T ( 2 ) =6.
Challenge
4. If 2 f ( x )−3 f ( 1x )=x , determine f (2).
2
5. Let f be a function defined by f ( n )=2 f ( n−1 ) +3 f ( n−2), where f ( 1 ) =3 and f (2)=1.
Determine f (5).
