Homework 1: Discussion forum - Motivation

After watching the Motivation Lecture, in a well-developed paragraph describe a situation in
which you were either motivated or lacking motivation. Then explain how one or more of the
Motivation Theories (Expectancy, Self-Efficacy, or Reinforcement) played a role in the situation.
Do not forget to explain why the theory you chose relates to the situation you were in.

- I like reading books. Ever since I was a child I've always been fascinated when I see a
book. So, I’ve started reading Filipino Tagalog books. One day, I decided to commit to
reading English books for 30 minutes every day. As I start to see progress and see
myself not getting bored and improving, I become more motivated to continue reading. I
begin to look forward to my daily reading sessions, and I start to set achievable goals for
myself, like reading a few more chapters or setting a goal when I have to finish the book.
This month I already read 5 books and I’m on to 6. My motivation grows as I see myself
getting closer to my goals, and I start to enjoy the process of learning and improving.
- Expectancy Theory played a role in my situation because I expect to gain something
from reading such as knowledge, enjoyment and relaxation. I am motivated to read
because I want to experience the satisfaction or pleasure that comes from achieving my
expected outcome. And my expectation of a positive outcome drives my behavior
(reading the book) to achieve that outcome.
- I think that reading a book will help me learn something new or enjoy a good story. I
believe that learning something new or enjoying the story will make me happy or
satisfied. And I want to feel happy or satisfied, so I am motivated to read the book.

Homework 2: Time table

monitor today: things you have to do, how long it took you
At the end of your day, evaluate how it went (are you happy with your day?)
0930 - woke up 1500 - eat lunch

1000 - cook breakfast 1530 - take a shower

1030 - read book 1600 - did laundry

1400 - gym 1700-2100 - school

- Today I am off at work so I just relaxed the whole day. I am happy with the result of my
day because I managed to read the book that I am trying to finish and went to the gym
for the first time again.

Homework : 2nd

1. Summarize this article in your own words: “How to Live In The Moment And Be More
Present
- The Power of Living in the Moment
Do you often find yourself thinking about the past or worrying about the future? This is a
common problem many of us face. But it's essential to focus on the present moment. Living in
the moment can bring many benefits to our lives. One of the most significant advantages of
living in the moment is its impact on our relationships. When we give our full attention to the
people around us, we can build stronger bonds with them. We can listen to them better,
understand their feelings, and show them we care. Living in the moment can also improve our
mental health. When we focus on the present, we can reduce stress and anxiety. We can enjoy
the small pleasures in life, like spending time with loved ones, watching a beautiful sunset, or
simply taking a deep breath. Another benefit of living in the moment is that it can help us
become more productive. When we focus on one task at a time, we can complete it more
efficiently. We can also make better decisions, as we're not distracted by thoughts of the past or
future. So, how can we start living in the moment? It's simple. We can begin by paying attention
to our thoughts and feelings. We can practice mindfulness techniques, like meditation or deep
breathing. We can also make time for activities we enjoy, like reading, walking, or spending time
with friends. In conclusion, living in the moment is a powerful way to improve our lives. By
focusing on the present, we can build stronger relationships, reduce stress and anxiety, become
more productive, and enjoy life more fully. So, let's make a conscious effort to live in the
moment and see the positive impact it can have on our lives.

2. Watch this video: https://youtu.be/MDjXpqmRdsE?si=ECEoPhlzLkIruoI1

a. Take notes of the video. Focus on the main point and try to make them as if you
had an exam on this particular video.

b. When you are done, please summarize it in your own words

(try to simplify it as if you have to give a lecture or better yet, you have to explain it to a class of
5 years old or someone that has no knowledge whatsoever about that topic)

A. The Ultimate Learning System

● Stage 1: Priming
● Objective: Establish a "big picture" understanding of the topic before class
● Steps:
○ Research key concepts through pre-reading, videos, or other resources
○ Create a visual diagram representing the topic's overall structure
○ Attempt practice questions to test initial understanding
● Benefits:
○ Prepares the brain for efficient learning
○ Facilitates active engagement during class
○ Reduces the need to write down every detail
Stage 2: In-Class Notes
● Objective: Actively engage with the material and record key points within the
established framework
● Steps:
○ Annotate the priming diagram with new details and insights
○ Jot down key observations that don't immediately fit into the diagram
○ Formulate active recall questions to test understanding later
● Benefits:
○ Shifts focus from passively writing to actively engaging with the material
○ Strengthens connections and reinforces understanding in real-time
○ Creates a personalized study resource for later review
Stage 3: Post-Class Review
● Objective: Consolidate learning and identify strengths and weaknesses shortly after
class
● Steps:
○ Clean up active recall questions from class
○ Refine the annotated diagram from class, incorporating key observations
○ Practice active recall by answering the formulated questions
● Benefits:
○ Reinforces learning through spaced repetition
○ Solidifies understanding and highlights areas requiring further study
○ Provides a focused review session for optimal knowledge retention
Stage 4: Revision
● Objective: Deepen understanding, solidify memory, and apply knowledge actively
through strategic revision techniques
● Steps:
○ Diagram optimization: Create a refined and visually appealing diagram
summarizing the entire topic
○ Active recall applications:
■ Blurt Method: Repeatedly write down everything remembered from a
specific section without looking at the source material
■ Feynman Technique: Teach the topic to someone with no prior
knowledge, simplifying and clarifying concepts through examples and
analogies
■ Practice Tests: Answer past exam questions, focusing on actively
recalling information and explaining the reasoning behind each answer
choice
● Benefits:
○ Transforms passive review into active learning
○ Promotes deep understanding and knowledge application
○ Identifies and addresses areas of weakness
○ Reduces the need for last-minute cramming
Additional Tips
● Focus on topics, not individual classes: Prime for a broader topic covering multiple
class sessions, rather than preparing for each class individually
● Use visual aids: Diagrams, illustrations, and mind maps enhance understanding and
memory
● Practice regularly: Consistent application of active recall techniques and spaced
repetition strengthens retention and recall
Summarize:
Learning is a very important part of growing up. To help us learn and remember new
things, we can follow a special set of steps. First, we prepare ourselves for learning by looking
at pictures or reading books. Next, when we're in class, we listen carefully to our teacher and
take notes to help us remember. After class, we review what we learned to make sure we
remember it correctly. Finally, we practice what we learned so that it stays in our memory. By
following these steps, we can become better learners and remember new things more easily.

Homework: 3rd
● Watch the following video:
1. https://www.ted.com/talks/
ramona_hacker_6_steps_to_improve_your_emotional_intelligence?language=en
2. https://youtu.be/-p2ksO4JQfQ?si=gTl9KR_Ks6kgFMbP

● After watching, do you believe you have a High EQ?:

1. Why or why not?
- I love reading books. It's my way to escape from real life. But I wonder, do I have a high
Emotional Quotient (EQ)? Reading helps me understand others. I see things from
different perspectives. This helps me with my friends and family. I can put myself in their
shoes and feel what they feel. But sometimes I read to avoid my problems. I don't want
to deal with my feelings. This isn't good. It means I'm not facing my emotions and
learning from them. So, do I have a high EQ? I'm not sure. Reading helps me
understand others, but it also helps me avoid my feelings. I need to find a balance
between escaping into books and dealing with my emotions. Maybe then I'll have a
higher EQ.

2. Write an essay on why we need Emotional Intelligence nowadays, how we can

use it as a skill and how we can improve/enhance (minimum 100 words)
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) helps us understand and manage our emotions and others'.
Today, EQ is very important for building strong relationships, managing stress, and making
good decisions. To improve EQ, know yourself, put yourself in others' shoes, communicate well,
and manage stress. By developing EQ, we become better, more caring, and successful people.
EQ is no longer just a nice thing to have, but something we really need to succeed in today's
world. It helps us in all areas of life.

Homework: 4th

1. Watch the video “The danger of a single story” on diversity and answer the following
questions.

Question 1: Have you ever experienced the ideas expressed regarding the “dangers of a single
story”
- As I’ve mentioned earlier, I love reading books and escaping into different worlds. I
might have encountered various stories and different perspectives through reading. For
instance, I remember watching movies and TV shows that portrayed people from certain
cultures in a stereotypical way. These portrayals were often inaccurate and unfair, but
they stuck with me. Later, when I met people from those cultures, I was surprised to find
that they were not like the stereotypes I had seen. I have experienced the dangers of a
single story. But I have also learned the importance of seeking out multiple perspectives
and stories. By doing so, I can become a more empathetic and understanding person.

Question 2: Do you agree with the speaker in the video? (This answer should be argumentative
and not include any personal antidotes.)
- The speaker is right. Single stories can be bad. They can make us think wrongly about
people or groups. When we only hear one story, we might believe it's the only truth. This
can be unfair. We should hear many stories so we can understand things better. Single
stories can also be used to hurt people. They can make us judge others without knowing
the full story. But when we share many stories, we can make things fairer. We can
understand each other better. We can see that everyone has their own story to tell.
Sharing many stories is important. It helps us be fair and understanding. We should
always try to hear many stories before we make up our minds.

2. Diversity vs Equity
a. First watch this video: https://youtu.be/deYUUfak08Y?si=v6L2TkNke-Gd1Y1R
b. Answer one of these questions;

I. What's the difference between diversity and equity?

- Diversity and equity are not the same thing. Diversity means having different kinds of
people together. It's like having a box of crayons with many colors. We can see many
different colors, but that doesn't mean they're all treated equally. Equity means being
fair. It's making sure everyone gets what they need to be equal. It's like making sure
everyone gets an equal piece of cake. Equity is important because it helps us make sure
everyone is treated fairly. Having diversity is good, but it's not enough. We need equity
to make sure everyone has an equal chance to succeed. We need to make sure
everyone is treated fairly and has what they need to thrive.

II. Which one should we need more in the workplace?

In the workplace, we need both diversity and equity. But I think equity is more important.
Equity means being fair. It makes sure everyone has an equal chance to succeed. This means
giving everyone the same opportunities and treating them with respect.
For example, a company might have a diverse workforce, but if only men are promoted
to leadership positions, that's not equity. Or, if a company offers flexible work hours, but only for
parents, that's not equity either.
Equity is important because it helps everyone succeed. It makes sure no one is left
behind. By being fair and equal, we can create a happy and successful workplace. This is why
equity is more important than diversity.

(essay - introduction, body, conclusion. Doesn't have to be a novel once again, just write what
you believe is right. Also include at least 1 source to support your claims!)

For the students that didn't participate in the class discussion, please also provide a short
answer on this two statements:

Do you agree or disagree?

1. “Higher education can help reinforce an attitude of tolerance, open-mindedness, and
respect for individual differences.”
- I agree that college helps people be more open-minded. College teaches us to think for
ourselves and listen to others. We meet people from different places and learn from
them. This helps us respect each other's differences.

2. “…diversity also represents opportunity in the workplace. Understanding cultural

differences—local and international—will help you to embrace others’ viewpoints, which
can lead to profitable solutions.”
- I agree. Diversity is good for the workplace. It helps us understand different perspectives
and come up with new ideas. For example, a team with people from different cultures
can create food menus that appeal to many customers.

Homework: 5th

Watch BOTH videos:

https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_the_power_of_vulnerability?language=en
https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_listening_to_shame?language=en

Then answer these two questions ( NOT ESSAY)

Question 1
Dr. Brown said in her video: “Vulnerability is not a weakness but an accurate measure
of courage.” Do you agree or disagree with this?
- I agree that "vulnerability is not a weakness but an accurate measure of courage."
Being vulnerable means taking risks and being open, which can be scary. It takes
courage to be ourselves, share our feelings, and trust others. When we're
vulnerable, we show that we're brave enough to face our fears and be honest. This
helps us build strong relationships, try new things, and live a more authentic life.
Vulnerability is a sign of strength, not weakness. It shows that we're courageous and
willing to take risks.

Question 2
What does Brené Brown mean when she says, “Shame is a focus on self (I am bad)
and guilt is focus on behavior (I did something bad)?” What is an example where people
may feel shame and when they may feel guilt (ie. eating a second piece of cake, lying to
a friend, breaking the law, etc.)? How are the two different in this situation?
- Shame and guilt are two feelings that are often mixed up. Shame is when we feel
bad about ourselves. Guilt is when we feel bad about something we did. When we
feel shame, we think we're bad people. This can make us feel hopeless and sad.
Guilt helps us learn from our mistakes. We know we did something wrong and want
to fix it. For example, eating too much cake might make us feel guilty. We think, "I
shouldn't have eaten that cake." This helps us make better choices next time.
Knowing the difference between shame and guilt can help us be kinder to ourselves.
