(d) The separation between two masses is reduced to half. How is the magnitude of
the gravitational force between them affected? Justify your answer.
(e) Why does a passenger fall down when he jumps out of a moving train?
(2)
Question No 3 [5 × 2 = 10]
(a) A hollow glass sphere floats with its entire volume submerged in water at 4°C. It,
however, sinks if the temperature of the water rises above 4°C. Why?
(b) State one advantage and one drawback of using a solar panel to produce electricity.
(c) State two characteristics of magnetic field lines.
(d) Mention two pieces of evidence to prove the existence of the earth’s magnetic field.
(e) State two differences between an electromagnet and a permanent magnet.
Question No 4 [5 × 2 = 10]
(a) State two differences between a real image and a virtual image.
(b) State the laws of reflection of light.
(c) Define principal focus of a concave mirror.
(d) A ray of light is incident normally on a plane mirror. What is the angle of incidence?
What is the angle between the incident and reflected rays?
(e) Calculate the number of images formed when a point object is placed asymmetrically
between two mirrors kept at an angle of 72° to each other.
SECTION B (40 marks)
Answer any four questions.
Question No 5
(a) The least count of a vernier calliper is 0·01 cm and its zero error is +0·02 cm. It is
used to measure the length of a rod. The reading on the main scale is 4·8 cm and
the 6th division on the vernier scale is in line with a mark on the main scale.
Calculate the correct length of the rod. [3]
(b) The pitch of a screw gauge is 1 mm and there are 100 divisions on the circular head.
It is used to measure the diameter of a wire. The reading on the main scale is 3 mm
and the 55th division on the circular scale is in line with the base line. Calculate the
diameter of the wire. Assume that the screw gauge is free from zero error. [3]
(c) (i) A simple pendulum is made by suspending a bob of mass 500g by a string 1m
long. Calculate its time period at a place where g = 10 m/s2.
(ii) How will the time period in part (i) be affected if a bob of mass 100g is used,
keeping the length of the string unchanged? [4]
(3)
Question No 6
(a) Show analytically: v2 = u2 + 2as, where the symbols have their usual meanings. [3]
(b) ‘The value of acceleration due to gravity remains the same at all places on the
earth’s surface.’ Is the statement true? Give reasons for your answer. [3]
(c) A car, starting from rest, reaches a velocity of 72 km/h in 10s. Draw a velocity-time
graph of the car. Calculate the average velocity of the car from the graph. [4]
Question No 7
(a) State Newton’s second law of motion. Derive the first law from it. [3]
(b) A cricket ball (mass = 100g), moving with a speed of 30 m/s, is brought to rest by a
player in 0·03s. Find: [3]
(i) the change in the momentum of the ball.
(ii) the average force applied by the player.
(c) Draw graphs to show the dependence of:
(i) acceleration on the force applied when mass remains constant.
(ii) acceleration on mass when the force applied remains constant. [4]
Question No 8
(a) In the case of a reflection of an object in a plane mirror, prove that the image
distance is always equal to the object distance. [3]
(b) An object is 60 cm in front of a plane mirror. If the mirror is now moved 25 cm away
