FESTIVAL DANCES
INTRODUCTION
Festivals are living testaments to best reminds us of our past, they are vibrant expressions of showing
our artistic heritage, culture, and tradition in our country. Festival dances are important for preserving culture,
strengthening community identity, and passing down traditions. They play vital roles in our lives as we
celebrate different kinds of events in our community which becomes a powerful force that bring people together
as a nation and a way of showing the unique traditions and cultural expressions from various regions and
communities.

Why are festival dances important? What role do they play in society?

Festival dances are the cultural dances performed with the strong beat of percussion instruments by the
people in the community sharing the same culture. It reflects the rich culture, history, and traditions of a
community, bringing people together in joyful expression. These dances are often accompanied by traditional
music, elaborate costumes, and synchronized movements that showcase the spirit of the occasion.
Festival dances can be religious, honoring saints or deities, or secular, celebrating historical events,
harvests, or cultural traditions. No matter the purpose, festival dances serve as a way to preserve cultural
heritage, promote unity, and spread happiness passing down across generations. Through festival dances,
communities share their stories, pride, and identity with the world.

Festival Dances Place of Origin Background and Nature
A. Religious Festival Dance These are dances characterized by movements showing
reverence to religious icon believed to have interceded in
their personal lives. This celebration is an expression of
thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest and for a favor or
request granted to them through divine intercession.
Ati-atihan Festival Kalibo, Aklan A feast held annually in January
to honor the Santo Niño.
Participant paint their faces black
to emulate the Ati or Aeta tribe,
the indigenous people of Aklan.
Sinulog Festival Cebu City Is the ritual prayer-dance held
around January, honoring Señor
Santo Niño or the Child Jesus.
Moriones Festival Mogpog, Marinduque An annual festival held during
holy week; it refers to the mask
and costume penitents who
march around the town for seven
days.
Dinagyang Festival Ilo-Ilo City It is held to celebrate the arrival
of Malay settlers in Panay held
around January.
The Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia Naga City, Bicol The feast day is preceded by a
novena in honor of the Lady of
Peñafrancia. It is celebrated on
the third Saturday of September.
Kuraldal Festival Sasmuan, Pampanga It has been a cherished tradition
for over 400 years. Held every
January, it celebrates Santa
Lucia, revered for her healing
abilities. Dressed in pink and
white, participants dance through
the streets as an expression of
their prayers for mercy and good
health.
Obando Fertility Rites Festival Obando, Bulacan Celebrated every May and they
have 3 patron saints; Santa Clara,
San Pascual, Nuesta Señora De
Salambao. During the festival,
thousands flock to the town of
Obando, to witness childless
couples from all over the region
(and at times, the country) dance
in order to increase their chances
of childbirth.
Higantes Festival Angono, Rizal The main event is a procession of
the patron saint, which is carried
by male devotees, conveyed by
(Pahadores) and celebrated every
4th week of November.
Dinagsa Festival Cadiz City It is a colorfuk Ati-atihan
celebration of the people of
Northern Negros. A celebration
in honor of Patron Sto. Niño
(Infant Jesus) held last week of
January.
Feast of the Black Nazarene Manila January begins with one of the
most important religious event in
the country, the Traslación. This
event marks the transfer of the
statue of the Black Nazarene (a
dark-coloured statue of Jesus)
from its original home in
Intramuros to Quiapo Church.

A. Secular or Non-Religious Festival These are the dances which are celebrated by the different
Dance communities to showcase their different culture and values of
industry and unity. They perform along the streets as they
celebrated their bountiful harvest accompanied by indigenous
instruments.
Lanzones Festival Camiguin Island It is an annual thanksgiving
celebration for the bountiful
harvest of their sweet lanzones
during the third week of October.
Masskara Festival Bacolod City An annual festival with highlights
held every 4th Sunday of October.
The celebration of positivity or
optimism in which the images of
colorful and cheerful masks help
the community people to become
resilient in their problems.
Ibalong Festival Legazpi City, Albay It celebrates the epic story of
Ibalong who was accompanied by
three legendary heroes. People
parade on the streets wearing
masks and costumes to imitate the
appearance of the heroes and
villains, portraying the classic
battles that made their way into
history. It is usually celebrated
from August 12 to 30 anually.
Kalilangan Festival General Santos City It celebrates the tradition of
sharing, hospitality, and altruism as
the part of the cultural heritage of
Mindanao every February 27.
Panagbenga Festival Baguio City It celebrates a tribute to the
beautiful flowers that bloom in
their community, further, a way of
expressing their gratitude by means
of floral offering in which the
floats are covered with flowers to
highlight the parade.
Bangus Festival Dagupan City, An annual festival that takes place
Pangasinan every April 30th, it celebrates the
abundant harvest of the bangus or
milkfish, which is considered to be
the national fish of the country.
Ibon-Ebon Festival Candaba, Pampanga A celebration held during the first
and second days of February. The
main features of the festival are the
migratory birds.
Kadayawan Festival Davao City It is celebrated annually in Davao
City every August. It serves as a
thanksgiving event for the gift of
nature, the wealth of culture, and
bounties of the harvest and serenity
of living. It also celebrates and
gives tribute to the lumads, a
collective group of indigenous
people living in the city.
Mango Festival Guimaras An annual month-long cultural,
agricultural, and food festival held
in the province of Guimaras,
Philippines, every May. It is a
celebration of the mango fruit,
which the province is known for,
emphasizes its significance in the
local economy of the province
alongside agriculture and tourism.
Abaca Festival Virac, Catanduanes A festival held each year, the
celebration happens every 4th week
of May. The festival is cognizance
of the importance of abaca fiber or
Manila hemp industry in the local
economy and the need to showcase
its versatility as a major source of
livelihood and craft material which
has brought Catanduanes fame and
fortune.
