14 Present Continuous

Tense

At the end of this chapter, students will be able to:

Look at the picture and complete the following sentences by choosing the correct
option.

1. Shilpa is ____________ from school. (coming/come)


2. She is ____________ her school bag. (carry/carrying)
3. She is ____________ an old man. (help/helping)
4. Her friends are ____________ ahead of her. (walk/walking)
5. I am ____________ to help her. (going/go)

Read the following sentences:
1. I am reading a poem.
2. Radha is dancing on the stage.
3. Mother is cooking food for Dad.
4. What are they doing?
In the above sentences, the highlighted words—am reading, is dancing, is cooking and
are doing—describe actions that are on going. These verbs are said to be in the present
continuous tense.

The present continuous tense is used to talk about an action that is


happening at the time of speaking. It expresses that the action has not yet
finished.

In the present continuous tense, we always use—am/is/are + verb + –ing.


A. Fill in the blanks with the present continuous form of the verbs given in the brackets.
(Hints: Use am/is/are + verb + –ing)

Rules for Forming Present Continuous Form of Verbs
€€ For most verbs, we add –ing at the end of the verb to form the present continuous
verb. For example,

€€ For verbs ending with –e, we remove –e and add –ing. For example,

€€ For verbs ending with a vowel + consonant, we double the consonant and then add
–ing. For example,

Productivity & Accountability

Look around your classroom. Write five simple sentences about what people around you
are doing.
Remember to use the correct grammar and structure.
Include a subject (the person doing the action), a verb (ending in -ing), and an object (if
needed). For example, Radha is writing in her notebook.
After writing your three sentences, exchange your book with a classmate. Read each
other’s sentences and check for any mistakes. If you find any, help your friend correct
them. Once done, give the book back to your classmate.
