• Middle Notes
• Base Notes
•Top notes are what you smell first. They are
also what disappears first,
• Most volatile Top Notes

•Middle notes appear as the top notes die off. These are the
fragrance’s core, determining which family the perfume
belongs to — for example, oriental, woody, fresh, or floral.
• Moderately volatile
Middle Notes
• Majority are moderately stimulating to mind and body
• Aroma will last up to 4 - 8 hours

Khaled Meselhy 03/11/2024
•Base notes accentuate and fix the fragrance’s middle notes,
also known as its theme. They comprise the fragrance’s
foundation, making the scent last longer on your skin.
• Less volatile
Base Notes
• Majority are calming, soothing to
mind and body
• Aroma lasts up to 12 -24 hours
• If blended with middle or top
note will “hold back” volatility

Understanding the Science of Perfume
1
Know the different notes.
Perfumes are a blend of different
levels of scent, also called “notes”.
When you spray a fragrance on your
skin, it moves through these notes
in the following order:
11
11
2
Know the ratios. When
mixing a fragrance, first
add your base notes, then
your middle notes, then
finally, your top notes. The
ideal ratio for blending
notes is 30% top notes,
50% middle notes, and
20% base notes

Know the basic recipe. To make a perfume, you need
more than just the top, middle, and base notes: you also
need something to add them to.
✓ Your process begins with a carrier oil (if use genuine
volatile oil). Popular choices include jojoba, sweet
almond, and grape seed oil.
✓ Next, you’ll slowly add drops of your base, middle,
and top notes to the carrier oil.
✓ Finally, you’ll add something to help merge the
ingredients together. Alcohol is a popular choice
because it evaporates quickly and helps diffuse the
perfume’s notes.
✓ If you’re looking to make a solid perfume (more like a
lip balm), use melted beeswax for the fixative instead
of alcohol or water.

Know out what notes your
favourite perfumes contain. If
you’re unsure of how to structure
a perfume, have a look at the
ingredients of your favourite
commercial scents.
If you have trouble finding the
ingredients or separating them
into notes, the website

is a great resource for breaking

Select & Buy (5)
15
15
Buy dark glass containers. Many people recommend using dark glass
containers because the dark glass helps protect your perfume from light,
which can shorten its lifespan. You’ll also want to make sure your glass
containers haven’t previously contained any food items, as any residual
scents will transfer to your perfume.

Buy a carrier oil. A carrier oil is what carries the scents in a particular
fragrance on to your skin. These are generally unscented and are used to dilute
genuine concentrated oils and aromatics that can otherwise irritate your skin.
Your carrier oil can really be anything. You can even use olive oil if you don’t
mind the scent. One popular perfumer simmers rose petals in virgin olive oil,
then combines it all with vitamin E oil to stabilize it
17
17
Buy the strongest alcohol you can find. A common choice amongst many
perfumers is a high-quality, (60 to 90% alc /vol) alcohol.

Select your scents. Your perfume can be
made out of a wide variety of ingredients.
Common aromatics for perfumes include
4
essential oils, flower petals, leaves, and herbs.
5
Decide on a method. The method for making
perfume will vary slightly depending on your
materials. Two common aromatics paths used
for perfume are plant materials (flowers,
leaves,
19
and herbs) and essential oils; the
methods vary for each of these.
19
1. Collect flowers, leaves, or herbs whose scent appeals to
you. Be sure to collect plant materials when the scent is
strong & Remove any unwanted plant materials. If you’re
using flowers, use only the petals.
2. Press the plant materials with a wooden spoon.
Plant Path
3. Pour some fixed oil into the glass container enough to
properly coat and cover your petals/leaves/herbs & shut
the lid
4. Let the jar sit in a cool, dark place for one to two weeks.
5. Open, strain and repeat. If the oil doesn’t smell as strong
as you’d like
6. Preserve your scented oil. Once you’re happy with the oil,
you20 can add 1 or 2 drops of a natural preservative such as
clove oil (antimicrobial) &/or vitamin E (antioxidant)

Oil Path
1. Pour 2 tbsp carrier oil into the glass bottle.
2. Add your essential oils. Start with your base notes, then add your
middle notes, then add your top notes. The ideal ratio is 20% base,
50% middle, and 30% top (or known formula brand).
Common in the 2 Paths
✓ Add the alcohol on oil extract of plant path or oil mix on oil path.
✓ Allow the perfume to sit for at least 48 hours. Shut the lid and allow
the perfume to cure for at least 48 hours. You can leave it for up to 6
weeks, which is when its scent will be at its strongest.
✓ Try a variation. To make a solid perfume (like a lip balm) instead of a
spray/liquid perfume, try substituting the alchol / water with melted
beeswax. You would add the melted beeswax to your perfume and
21
then pour the warm mixture into a container to solidify

way to make concentrate perfume
Favorite way to make perfume is with a roll-on bottle.
It’s easier than making a solid perfume and faster than
a cologne. And you can apply it by just rolling it over
your pulse points. Roller ball blends are all the rage right
now for treating headaches, insomnia and other
ailments, but you can just as easily mix up a lovely
essential oil roller ball perfume blend.
You’ll need just three supplies:
•Essential oils
•Carrier oil: something light with little to no scent
like jojoba, grapeseed or sweet almond oil
•Amber or blue 30 ml roll-on bottles
Add your essential oils to the roll on bottle. For
everyday use, use a max of 10-12 drops in a 30 ml
container. After you’ve drizzled the oils in, swirl the
bottle to combine them. Then fill the rest of the bottle
with carrier oil. Replace cap and swirl again. Apply to
your pulse points to enjoy. Reapply throughout the day
to experience again. Shake the bottle before each use.

1. Floral
Jasmine and rose both have heady, floral scents. To keep them from getting overpowering, blend with almost
any citrus oil. Here are 2 options for a flirty floral scent.
•5 drops sweet orange
•2 drops lime peel
•2 drops jasmine absolute in jojoba oil
•2 drops vanilla in jojoba oil
Option 2
•2 drops rose absolute
•4 drops sandalwood in jojoba oil
•5 drops bergamot
2. Citrus
Citrus scents are uplifting and fresh. Roll this one on when you need an energy or mood boost. If rosemary’s
scent brings to mind an afternoon of cleaning, try lavender or grapefruit instead. I always hold the essential oil
bottles together in my hand and waft them under my nose before blending. That way I can see if I like a scent
combo.
•5 drops lemon
•3 drops rosemary
•2 drops neroli or 4 drops sweet orange
3. Earthy
I love this rich, earthy scent. Don’t be scared of patchouli!
•3 drops patchouli
•3 drops palmarosa
•1 drop vetiver
•4-5 drops cedarwood
•1 drop neroli
4. Spicy
Clove will quickly overpower a blend so go slow when adding it or use a pipette.
•5 drops bergamot
•1 drop clove
•4 drops sandalwood in jojoba oil
•2 drops vanilla in jojoba oil
