Chapter 6: Applied Networking Name: __cohllin ynigo________________________
1. What is the purpose of MAC addresses? What are the two parts that make up a MAC?
The purpose of a MAC is to give a a NIC a uniquie ID assigned to a network device, meaning data packets can
be directed to the correct destination on a local network.
The two parts that make up a MAC is A Organizationally unique indetifer (UOI) and the Network Interface
Controller (NIC) specific identifier.
2. How is IPv6 different from IPv4?
Ipv6 is different from Ipv4 by ipv6 has 128 bit addresses while ipv4 has 32 bit addresses and IPv6 improve network per-
formance and security.
3. When would a technician use a static IP? What network service makes dynamic IP addressing possible?
A Technician would use a static ip when a device needs a unchanging IP address for reliable access and communication.
DHCP is the network service that makes dynamic IP addressing possible.
4. What is a Link-Local Address and when would it be used? What is the default Windows IPv4 link-local address name
and range?
A link-local address is a network address used for communication only within a single network. It may be
used to file sharing or printing within a local network. The default windows Ipv4 link local address range is
169.254.0.0.
5. How do networks use ICMP? What popular command relies on ICMP to function?
Networks use ICMP mainly for error reporting. The popular command that relies on ICMP to function is ping.
6. After installing a brand-new SOHO router, what steps should a technician take to access the router’s configuration
page?
1.connect to the router
2. open a web browser
3.enter the routers default address in the address bar (192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1)
7. What is the purpose of a WMN?
The purpose of WMN is to provide seamless, reliable, and wide-ranging wi-fi coverage.
8. What is QoS? Why would you configure QoS on a Wireless Router?
Qos means Quality of Service which allows improved network performance and user experince. You might
configure QoS on a wireless router for applications using a lot of bandwith like video conferencing or VOIP.
9. What is a Screened Subnet (DMZ)?
DMZ is a network that provides services to an untrusted network while protecting the internal network from
threats.
10. How does port forwarding differ from port triggering?
Port forwarding is static meaning its permanently mapped to a internal device and is always open while port triggering is
a dynamic opening which means it only opens when a triggering event occurs and it's temporary access.
11. A technician runs the ipconfig command and notices that the computer is displaying an IP address of 169.254.254.2.
What are 3 probable causes and possible solutions for this issue?
The DHCP server is unreachable , the DHCP server might be misconfigured or down , and network connec-
tivity problems.
The 3 possible resolutions are 1. if a DHCP server is unreachable , reboot your router and modem. 2. If a
DHCP server is misconfigured or down is to troubleshoot dhcp server. and if network connenctivity problems
are occuring you can troubleshoot your network.
12. What are some reasons a wireless network may run slowly or users may constantly lose connectivity?
a. router or modem issues
b. network congestion
c. wifi signial issues
13. By default, what does a dhcp server automatically assign?
a. IP address
b. subnet mask
c. default gateway
14. What is one use for pinging the loopback address?
One use for pinging the loopback address is verify the TCP/IP protocol stack is configured correctly on the local
computer.
15. What are the rules for compressing an IPv6 address?
a. Leading zeros in any segment can be omitted
b. a single string of contiguous all zero segments can be replaced with a double colon (::)
c. remove an entire strings of 0
16. What is the significance of channels 1, 6, 11?
The significance of channels 1 , 6 , 11 is that they are the only three non-overlapping channels in the 2.4 GHz fre-
quency band.
17. For the following IPv4 address, identify the class, if the address is public or private, and circle the network
portion of the address:
IP address Class? Public or Private?
192.168.0.2 C private
10.4.45.127 A private
172.33.33.33 B public
192.166.34.54 C private
172.23.23.10 B public
180.15.0.5 B public
120.8.8.8 A private
13.225.224.47 A private
54.191.191.127 A private
169.254.65.65 B public
