Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)
Integral to billing medical services and procedures for reimbursement, Current
Procedural Terminology (CPT)® is the language spoken between providers and
payers. CPT® refers to a set of medical codes used by physicians, allied health
professionals, nonphysician practitioners, hospitals, outpatient facilities, and
laboratories to describe the procedures and services they perform.
Specifically, CPT® codes are used to report procedures and services to federal and
private payers for reimbursement of rendered healthcare.
CPT® codes consist of five characters. Most codes are numeric,
 5 Digit Numerical Codes range from 00100–99499
for example; let us assume the code as 12345, In that 4,5 denotes Severity,
Laterality, Specificity; 2,3 denotes Sub Procedure and 1 denotes System like
Respiratory, Digestive, Cardiology etc,.
 but some codes have a fifth alpha character, such as F, T, or U. For Example,
3006F , 0510T , 0079U

The six main sections of CPT® Category I codes and their sequences are:

When the 5 digit numerical code start with

1- Integumentary System
2-Musculoskeletal System
3-Respiratory System & Cardiovascular System
4-Digestive System
5-Genito& Urinary System
6-Remaining System (Endocrine System and Nervous System ,Ocular and
Auditory) except 1-5
7- Radiology (Including Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Ultrasound)
8- Pathology and Laboratory

General Guidelines For CPT Coding

 Mother Code - The code description starts with Capital letter and the
description has semicolon punctuation (;)
For example 11004 – Debridement of skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle and
fascia for necrotizing soft tissue infection ; external genitalia and perineum
 Chain code – The code starts with small letter and it no ;
For example 11005 – abdominal wall, with or without fascia closure
 So how to read the chain code ? 1st we have to read the mother code until ;
punctuation and conti reading the chain code fully.
11005 - Debridement of skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle and fascia for
necrotizing soft tissue infection; abdominal wall, with or without fascia
closure.
 Additional Code – It is otherwise known as add on code. It starts with + symbol
For example : +11001
 Modifiers – It is used to simplify the codes
For example: 26,50,51…
Note: we should not append the modifiers for add on codes
