HISTORY OF RADIOLOGY

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE HISTORY OF RADIOLOGY

ASSIGNMENT 3

BÁRBARA CORRALES AND NEISSER RIVERA

Wilhelm Röntgen was a German physicist best known for
his discovery of X-rays. Born on March 27, 1845, in
Lennep, Prussia (now Germany), Röntgen made this
groundbreaking discovery on November 8, 1895. This
discovery marked the inception of medical radiology and
revolutionized the way internal structures of the body
could be visualized non-invasively.

WHO IS WILHELM
RÖNTGEN?
WHEN WAS THE X-RAY
The X-ray was discovered on November 8, 1895, by
DISCOVERED?
Wilhelm Röntgen. During his experiments with cathode
rays, Röntgen observed that a new type of ray could
penetrate opaque materials and create images on
photographic plates. This observation led to the
identification of X-rays, which he initially called
"unknown rays" or "X-rays." His discovery was a significant
advancement in medical imaging and radiology.
WHY WERE THE 1970S CALLED
THE GOLDEN DECADE?
The 1970s are called the "golden decade" of radiology because
of major advancements in imaging technology, notably the
introduction of computed tomography (CT) scanning. The first CT
CT scanner was introduced in 1972, offering detailed cross-
sectional images of the body, which revolutionized diagnostic
imaging. This period also saw significant progress in other
imaging techniques like ultrasound and magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI). These innovations greatly enhanced diagnostic
accuracy and patient care.

WHAT WERE THE SUBDIVISIONS

FOR EACH DECADE?
WHO AND WHEN WERE THE RADIOGRAPHS
INTRODUCED AND HOW?

Radiographs were first introduced by Wilhelm Röntgen. Initially,

radiographs were produced using glass photographic plates, which
captured the X-ray images. This method was part of Röntgen's
pioneering work and marked the beginning of X-ray imaging.

In 1918, George Eastman introduced a significant advancement by

replacing glass plates with photographic film. This innovation made the
process of taking and developing radiographs more practical and
efficient, leading to broader adoption of X-ray imaging in medical
practice.
The development of X-ray technology
began with Wilhelm Röntgen’s initial
discovery. The basic X-ray apparatuses
improved over time, and as hospitals
acquired more advanced equipment, the
technology evolved to enhance both
diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

HOW WAS X-RAY

DEVELOPED?
In the 1950s, significant advancements occurred in X-ray WHAT OCCURRED IN THE
technology: 1950S WITH THE X-RAY?
Development of the Image Intensifier: The image
intensifier was introduced, which significantly enhanced
the brightness of X-ray images. This device improved the
visibility of internal structures and reduced the need for
higher doses of radiation.
X-ray Television: X-ray television systems were
developed, allowing for real-time viewing of X-ray images.
This innovation enabled more dynamic and interactive
diagnostic procedures, providing immediate feedback
during examinations.
WHO INVENTED THE CT SCANNING
AND WHEN WAS IT ANNOUNCED?

Computed tomography (CT) scanning was invented

by Godfrey Hounsfield, a British engineer, and Allan
Cormack, a South African physicist. The first CT
scanner, known as the EMI scanner, was announced
in 1972. This technology revolutionized medical
imaging by providing detailed cross-sectional
images of the body, which significantly improved
diagnostic capabilities and clinical practice.
WHERE AND WHEN WAS THE FIRST
HUMAN IMAGE OBTAINED?
The first human image obtained using any imaging technology
was created with X-rays. Wilhelm Röntgen produced the first
radiograph of a human body part on December 22, 1895. This
image was of Röntgen's wife's hand, showing the bones and her
wedding ring. This early X-ray image demonstrated the
potential of this new technology to visualize internal
structures non-invasively, marking a significant milestone in
medical imaging.
New imaging technologies, such as digital imaging, WHAT DISPLACED THE OLDER
CT scanning, and ultrasound, have replaced many
older X-ray techniques. Digital technology TECHNIQUE TO A NEW ONE?
allowed for the digital recording and storage of
images, while CT scanning and ultrasound offered
more detailed and versatile imaging options,
reducing the reliance on traditional X-ray
methods for some applications.
