Balangay - Unique form of Government
The Balangay, also known as the Barangay dates back to 320 AD and was the first wooden
watercraft excavated in Southeast Asia. By using the lashed-lug construction method, the Balangay
could withstand the rough seas and navigate through various waterways effectively. Each balangay
was led by a datu with its own chief of staff. The Balangay boats were constructed with different sizes
and designs, depending on their specific purpose and the region where they were built. From small
fishing boats to larger trading vessels, the Balangay played a significant role in the maritime activities
of the Philippines.
Baybayin - The Original Script of the Philippines
Baybayin, one of the ancient pre-colonial writing systems used by early Filipinos, comes from
the Tagalog root word baybay, which means to spell. It dates back way before the Spaniards reached
our shores through the 18th century. Every character is based on a consonant letter with a vowel
notation indicating the corresponding vowel sound. Baybayin has 14 syllabic consonant characters,
15 if the da and ra consonants are separated, and three vowel characters: a, e-i, and o-u. In 1604
and 1609, the Spanish friars Pedro Chirino and Antonio de Morga remarked that Baybayin was widely
recognized and that it was typically used for poetry and other personal works.
