Poetry Analysis for Students

The poem 'The Fog' by Carl Sandburg uses metaphor to compare fog to a cat, highlighting its silent and stealthy movement. The fog is described as observing its surroundings quietly before moving on, similar to how a cat behaves. The analysis suggests that readers can learn to enjoy life and remain observant, much like the nature of fog and cats.

The Fog by Carl Sandburg

The fog comes

on little cat feet.

It sits looking

over harbor and city

on silent haunches

and then moves on.

(a) What do the ‘little cat feet’ represent in this poem? (2)

The little cat feet represent that the fog is silent, and moves steadily, like a cat.

(b) What are three similarities between “fog” and the animal it is being compared to?

The similarities between the fog and the cat are that they both tread silently, they both move at
a steady, stalkingly pace and they both are stealthy, and go and come as they please. The fog
also observes its surroundings silently and overlooks the environment like a cat, then, after a
while it moves on.

(c) Describe the movement of the fog. (2)

The fog moves silently and stealthily, it appears suddenly and disappears too. It does not make
a sound. It rests in places where it can see an overview of the city and then moves on.
(d) What is the main poetic device used in this poem? Why is it effective? (3)

The main poetic device used in this poem is metaphor, because the fog is metaphorically written
to be similar to the cat. It is effective because it creates an image in the reader‘s mind of the fog
and how its stealthy and silent.

(e) Try to infer what the word “haunches” means by looking at in context of the sentence it is
mentioned in. (2)

I think haunches means the cats body, which is described as silent because the fog, like a cat,
sits silently and observes its surroundings.

(f) Think of any other animal that can best replace the cat in the poem, “Fog.” Write a paragraph
that would tell us about the resemblance of the fog with that animal. (4)

I think another animal that the fog resembles is a leopard, because leopards are stealthy
animals, and they wait silently for their prey and then attack. They move stealthily on their feet
and take in their environment, keeping their eyes open for predators or prey. They can easily
climb on trees and can camouflage into their surroundings like fog.

(g) Is there a lesson to be learned in this poem? What can we, as readers, take away from the
nature of cats and fog on how to live our own lives. (4)

I think the lesson we can learn from this poem is that we should enjoy our lives and relax like
the fog, we should never confide in anyone too much and never reveal too much. We should
always observe our surroundings too.
