That’s correct!
What about the second picture?
Jay? Ma’am, the plants were destroyed.
What do you think is the reason why
people are evacuating and the plants
were destroyed?
John? Ma’am, I think it is due to a massive
volcano explosion. The people are
evacuating because they live near the
location of the volcano.
Thank you!
2. Engage Now to start our next activity, I will
group you into 4. I have envelopes
here and at the back there’s a
question.
Inside of these envelopes are jumbled
words, so you were going to arrange it
to find an answer to the questions
given.
Am I clear?
Yes Ma’am
Ok! I’ll give you 2 minutes each.
Time’s up!
First group kindly read the question
and follow it with your answer.

ANSWER: MAYON VOLCANO
Very good! Thank you for your
participation. Kindly give yourself a
thumbs up.
I think you already have an idea
about our topic.
Presentation of Topic What did you notice from our
activities?
Yes, Jocelyn?
Ma’am I noticed that it’s all about
volcanoes
Correct!
Presentation of Objectives Before we proceed to our discussion,
let us first read the objectives.
Learning Objectives:
A. differentiate between active and
inactive volcanoes
B. simulate the eruption of volcano
C. demonstrate some ways to protect

yourself during volcanic eruption
Unlocking of Difficulties Here are some terms that will be
encountered during the lesson.
Everyone please read…
Lava – a molten rock is called when it
flows out of a volcano or volcanic vent.
Volcanic Ash - a mixture of rock,
mineral, and glass particles expelled
from a volcano during a volcanic
eruption.
Eruption- is an explosion of steam and
lava from a volcano.
3. Explore Now that you are familiar with those
difficult terminologies, we will have an
activity to understand how an eruption
of a volcano will occur.
This activity is called “LAVA-BALL”.
Here’s the instruction:
I will choose 1 student to pour the
vinegar inside of this volcano and all of
you will observe how an eruption
occurs. After that I have 4 balloons
here and a while ago I put 4 different
colored papers under your chairs and
those students who got that will go in
front and pop the assigned balloon and
answer the question inside.
Am I clear?
Yes, ma’am.
I will give you 2 minutes for the
experiment. You can start now

Are you done?
Kindly go back to your seats and check
if there’s a balloon under. Yes,ma’am.
Now those students who got that
please come here in front.
The first popper is Mr./Ms. Purple
Question 1.
What will happen when you slowly pour
the vinegar inside?
Thank you!
Answer: the eruption of a volcano
The second popper is Mr./Ms. Yellow happened.
Question 2.
Thank you! If the erupting volcano is beside you, is
it safe to observe it from your current
The third popper is Mr./Ms. Red place?
Answer: No, it's not safe because it can
affect your health.
Question 3.
What will happen to the surroundings
after a volcano eruption occurs?
And the last popper is Mr./Ms. Blue
Answer: it can destroy properties,
damaging plants and loss of life.

Question 4.
What should be done when a volcanic
eruption occurs?
Answer : protect yourself from ash,
evacuate immediately and wear a
mask.
Thank you. Kindly give them 5 claps!
You may now go back to your seats
4. Explain Let’s come now to the discussion but
before that, anyone from the class who
can explain what a volcano is? Jen?
Ma’am, I think volcano refers to a
mountain or hill typically conical, having
a crater or vent in which lava, rock
fragments and gas are or have been
erupted from the earth’s crust.
Very good!
The Philippines is located along the
Ring of Fire. As a result, it is a home to
many volcanoes.
Do you know which volcano is the
most well-known in the Philippines?
Ma’am! It is the Mayon Volcano which is
located in the Albay Province.
Very good!
Mayon volcano is one of the most
famous volcanoes around the
Philippines because of its perfect cone
shape.
There are two classifications of
volcanoes according to Philippine
Republic of the Philippines
Baao Community College
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION
San Juan, Baao, Camarines Sur
Institute of Volcanology and
Seismology (PHIVOLCS). These are
active and inactive volcanoes.
How can we differentiate these two
classification of volcanoes?
Yes, Jay? Active volcanoes are those volcanoes
that have had at least one eruption
during the past 10,000 years. They are
those that erupted recently and still
showing regular activity like emission of
gases, lava, and ash flows. While,
Inactive volcanoes are those volcanoes
that have not erupted for last 10,000
years and is not expected to erupt again
in a comparable time scale in the future
Very good!
We can classify volcanoes whether
they are active or inactive based on
their record of eruption. If the
volcanoes erupted within the last 600
years or those that erupted 10,000
years ago. Therefore, the volcanoes
are active. While, inactive volcanoes
are those volcanoes that have not
erupted for the last 10,000 years and
not showing regular activity like the
emission of gases.
Yes, ma’am
Do you understand class?
Very good!
Here are some examples of active and
inactive volcanoes found in the
Philippines.

∙ Taal Volcano
∙ Mount Bulusan
Inactive Volcanoes:

∙ Mt. Makiling
5. Elaborate Now that you have learned about the
difference between active and inactive
volcanoes, it is better to know
important ways to protect yourself
during volcanic eruptions.
Going back to our first activity, during
a volcanic eruption, it is important to
leave the area immediately.
What other important ways to protect
yourself during a volcanic eruption?
Yes, John?
Ma’am, I will wear a dust mask during
a volcanic eruption so as not to inhale
ash fall.
That’s correct!
What else?
Keep our skin covered to avoid irritation
from contact with ash. Also, we need to
wear protective goggles to protect our
eyes from ash.
Very good!

Generalization To generalize our topic for today, what
have you learned? Mary?
I learned about Volcano and the two
classifications, Ma’am!
What are these two classifications?
The classifications of volcanoes are
active and inactive volcanoes.
How can you differentiate active and
inactive volcanoes?
Ma’am, based on their record of
eruption, we can classify whether those
volcanoes are either active or inactive.
6. Evaluate Now to test your understanding about
the discussion, let’s have a quiz. I’ll be
giving you an activity sheet, please
read the directions carefully.
You’re going to answer the quiz in 2
minutes.
You may start now.
