CME365 Problems:
1) Explain the algorithm for maximum power point tracking. Also discuss the necessary conditions while
synchronizing the PV system with grid supply.
2) An inclined surface facing due south is tilted at 60 deg with horizontal. It's location is at Aligarh
(latitude 27°54' N, longitude 78°04' E) on March 22 at 1 PM (IST). The reflection coefficient of the
ground is 0.2. Calculate the total radiation received at the surface. Also calculate the values of Rb, Rd and
Rr. (NOV/DEC 2022, APR/MAY 2022)
3) A flat Plate solar thermal collector is installed on the roof of a hotel in New Delhi (latitude = 28.58°N).
The collector surface of 10 m² area is pointing towards south with angle of 30° with horizontal. a) The
angle of incidence of sunlight (0) is to be calculated for First December at Local Apparent Time of 9 AM.
(Corresponding hour angle w = 45°) b) With power density of 0.6kW/m³, what is the power collection at
the said time? c) The water tank of the thermal system contains 1000 kg of water, initially at 30°C. What
will be the temperature of water after 1 hour assuming constant power collection of (b)? (NOV/DEC
2019)
4) A horizontal shaft, propeller type wind-turbine is located in area having Speed of wind 10 m/s at 1 atm
and 15°C. Calculate the following:
a) Air density p, kg/m³.
b) Total power density in wind stream, W/m².
c) Maximum possible obtainable power density, W/m². d) Actual obtainable power density, W/m².
e) Total power from the wind-turbine of 120 m dia.
f) Torque and axial thrust (Na) on the wind-turbine operating at 40 rpm and at maximum efficiency of
42%. (NOV/DEC 2019)
5) In a particular site, the atmospheric pressure is 1.01325 bar and temperature is 25°C. The wind is
available at 9 m/sec. Evaluate the following:
(i) Power density available in the site
(ii) Maximum Power density possible
(iii) Obtainable power density assuming the over all efficiency is 35%
(iv) Power density of the windmill if the diameter is 50 m and
(v) Axial thrust force action on the wind mill blade. (APR/MAY 2023)
