A- SIMPLE STRESS
1. A hollow steel tube with an inside diameter of 100mm must carry a tensile load of 400kN. Determine the outside
diameter of the tube if the stress is limited to 120MN/m^2.
2. What is the maximum allowable compressive load in kips that can be carried by a metal cube with edge 5 inches long if
the factor of safety is 1.5 and the yield stress is 3000psi?
3. What force is required to punch a 20mm diameter hole in a plate that is 25mm thick? The shear strength is 350 MPA.
4. A 20mm diameter rivet joins the plates that are each 110mm wide. The allowable stresses are 120MPa for bearing in
the plate material and 60MPa for shearing of the rivet. Determine the minimum thickness of each plate and the average
tensile stress in the plate.
B- THIN-WALLED PRESSURE VESSEL
1. Calculate the minimum wall thickness for a cylindrical vessel that is to carry a gas at a pressure of 1400psi. The
diameter of the vessel is 2ft and the stress is limited to 12ksi.
2. The wall thickness of a 4ft diameter spherical tank is 5/16 in. Calculate the allowable internal pressure if the stress is
limited to 8000psi.
C- STRESS IN ROTATING RING ABOUT ITS DIAMETER
1. At what angular velocity will the stress in a rotating ring equal to 150MPa if it's mean radius is220mm? The density of
steel is 7.85Mg/m^3.
D- STRESS AND STRAIN
1. A bar 1.9m long is subjected to a tensile load. Find the strain in the bar if the change in length is 0.038cm.
2. Find the modulus of resilience in kJ/m^3 for a cast iron with normal stress of 230MPa and E = 165GPa.
3. A steel wire 10m long hanging vertically supports a tensile load of 2000N. Neglecting the weight of the wire, determine
the required diameter if the stress is not to exceed 140MPa and the total elongation is not t exceed 5mm. Use E = 200GPa.
4. A homogeneous steel rod 150m long, 300mm^2 in cross section hangs vertically at one end and supports a tensile load
of 20kN at the other end. If the unit mass of steel is 7850kg/m^3 and E = 200GPa, find the total elongation of the rod.
5. A reinforced concrete column 200mm in diameter is designed to carry an axial compressive load of 300kN. Determine
the required area of the reinforcing steel if the allowable stresses are 6MPa and 120MPa for the concrete and steel
respectively. Use Eco = 14GPa and Est = 200GPa.
6. A steel rod 5m long and 30mm in diameter is subjected to an axial load of 50kN. Determine the change in the diameter
in mm of the rod. Use E = 200GPa and v = 0.25. Find also the change in volume, the dilatation and strain energy in the
rod. 7. Steel railroad rails 10m long are laid with a clearance of 3mm at a temperature of 15°C. At what temperature will
the rails just touch? What stress would be induced in the rails at that temperature if there were no initial clearance?
Assume
α = 11.7µm/m-°C and E = 200GPa.
E- TORSION
1. A solid steel shaft 5m long is stressed 80MPa when twisted through 4°. Using G = 83GPa, compute the shaft diameter.
What power can be transmitted by the shaft at 20Hz.
2. A hollow circular bar has an inner radius r 1 and an outer radius r 2. If r1 = 0.5 r2 what percentage of torque can the shaft
carry in comparison with a solid shaft?
3. A flanged bolt coupling consists of 10 steel 20mm diameter bolts spaced evenly around a bolt circle 400mm in
diameter. Determine the torque capacity of the coupling if the allowable shearing stress in the bolts id 40MPa
4. A structural steel tube with a 203mmx203mm square cross section has an average wall thickness of 6.35mm. The tube
resists a torque of 8N-m. What is the average shear flow?
5. A helical spring is made by wrapping steel wire 20mm in diameter around a forming cylinder 150mm in diameter.
Compute the number of turns required to permit an elongation of 100mm without exceeding a shearing stress of 140MPa.
Use G = 83GPa.
F- STRESSES AND DEFLECTION IN BEAM
1. A simply supported rectangular beam 50mm wide by 100mm deep caries a uniform load of 1200N/m over its entire
length. What is the maximum length of the beam if the flexural stress is limited to 20MPa?
2. A cantilever beam 3m long carries a concentrated load of 35kN at the free end. The material is structural steel and the
maximum bending stress is not to exceed 125MPa. Determine the diameter of the beam if it has circular cross section.
3. A rectangular beam has a cross section of 5cm wide by 10cm deep and maximum shear of 2250N. What is the
