Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations– What is in the store
for developers.
UI overhaul and Visual studio
A very welcomed move by Microsoft. Gone are the days of MorphX IDE, welcome Visual
Studio (VS) for all your development work. A complete UI overhaul – thanks to now the
web-based Dynamics 365 client, which will help you to provide improved end-user
experience.

Extensions
There is a lot to learn now, as Visual Studio is the new IDE for Dynamics 365 development
work. One of the very first things to learn will be extensions. Earlier there was an option
for the developer to modify the existing object but now, there is no such option. The
developer will have to create an extension of the object and then perform the
customizations. This will not affect the existing system object thereby paving way for easy
future upgrades.

Integration / Data Entities
Integration has also undergone a major change. Now it is called ‘Data entities’. Data
entities is a common framework for DIXF and AIF web service. The developer will have
to take extra precaution while upgrading from AX 2012 as in Dynamics 365 the web
services have become in a restful state with JSON-formatted data. So existing
customization (in older versions of AX) related to integration will go for a complete change.

Embracing LCS fully
Earlier it was possible to manage AX 2012 instance without LCS but now it is not. One
has to have LCS linked with the D365 instance. From LCS one can manage many things
like the update, request to MS for data refresh or a new instance, etc. Therefore,
developers who have not been acquainted with LCS until now will have to learn and get
used to it.

Competition
AX 2012 would require a developer to have special ‘X++’ skill but after the introduction of
D365 which has all the development in Visual Studio; this opens floodgates for developers
who were earlier working on Visual Studio platform to easily get in and start developing
for D365. Though a bit of learning curve for them as well but not as much for the traditional
developer coming from AX 2012 to D365. This is will ensure a stiff competition, which will
bring out best of each developer creating a win-win situation for organization and client.
