Chapter 32 – Word Formation
These are some of the newest words in English:
1. Internest: a comfy spot, or a nest, to surf the internet for hours on end.
2. Textovert: a person who is shy in person but very expressive in texts.
3. Cellfish: an individual who is always talking on a cell phone and when doing so is rude
and inconsiderate of others.
4. Nonversation: a useless, pointless conversation.
5. Errorist: someone who always makes mistakes.
6. Textpectation: expectation involved when waiting for someone’s text messages.
7. Youniverse: a person whose universe consists only of them.
8. Unlightening: learning something makes you dumber
There are many ways by which we can form new words in the English Language. They are discussed
below:
1. Blending: when one part of a word is combined with another
1. Brunch = breakfast + lunch
2. Smog = smoke + fog
3. Swatch = Swiss + watch
2. Compounding: adding one base word to another base word.
1. Teapot = tea + pot
2. Sightseeing = sight + seeing
3. Girlfriend = girl + friend
4. Birthday = birth + day
5. Son-in-law = son + in + law
3. Conversion: using one part of speech to do the function of another.
1. That is an empty bottle. (Here, “empty” is an adjective)
Please empty that bottle. (Here, “empty” is used as a verb)
2. You need a permit to cross the border. (Here, “permit” is a noun)
I will permit you to cross the border. (Here, it is used as a verb)
3. Have you signed the contract yet?
He has contracted HIV AIDS.
4. Clipping: contracted form of a word replacing the full form.
1. Zoo = Zoological gardens
2. Exam = Examination
3. Pants = Pantaloon
4. Bike = Bicycle
5. Fan = Fanatic
6. Flu = Influenza
7. Cab = Cabriolet
8. Miss = Mistress
5. Affixation: the process of word formation by adding a prefix or a suffix to the base word.
a. Negative Prefix: {un-, in-, non-, a-}
Unfair, inability, nonpracticing, amoral
These prefixes are used to give a negative sense to the word.
“un-” = opposed to & “non-” = not
Unscientific & non-scientific are two different things.
b. Pejorative Prefixes: {mis-, mal-, pseudo-}
Misbehave, malfunction, malpractice, pseudo-intellectual.
These prefixes are used to show disapproval.
c. Reversative Prefix: {un-, de-, dis-}
Unseat, Deforestation, untie.
These prefixes signify the reversal of the natural order of an action.
d. Prefixes of Degree or Size:
Supertanker, hypertension, mini-van.
e. Prefixes of Time & Order:
Postponed, premarital, ex-minister

a. Adverbial Suffixes:
Extremely, Slowly, Badly
b. Adjective Suffixes:
Venerable, Clownish, Musical, Heroic, Selfish, Attentive
c. Noun Suffixes:
Payment, Accountant, Exploration, Highness, Boyhood.
