MICROMETER
• A micrometre can provide better list counts and accuracy than a Vernier
calliper.
• Least count 0.01 mm.
Least count = value of 1 division of main scale /
number of division on Thimble
• A micrometre allows a measurement of the size of a body . It is
one of the most accurate mechanical device in common use .
• It consist a main scale and the thimble.
• Total number of division in Thimble is 50 and each divisions least
count is 0.01 mm.
• On the Sleeve/barrel main scale graduated .
• Method of measurement
Step-1 find the whole number of mm in the sleeve/barrel.
Step-2 find the reading of thimble and multiply by 0.0 1 mm.
Step-3 Add the value in step 1 and step 2.
Q. In a simple micrometer with screw pitch 0.5 mm and divisions on
thimble 50 , the reading corresponding 5 division on barrel , and 12
divisions on thimble is
a) 2.620 mm b) 2.512 mm c) 2.120 mm d) 5.012 mm [ISRO]
Q. How many divisions are graduated on the thimble of micrometer ?
a) 15 b) 50 c) 25 d) 40 [RRB JE 2019]
Q. Which of the following is not an angular measuring instrument ?
a)Sine bar b) Bevel Protractor
c) Micrometer d) Autocollimator [RRB JE 2019]
SLIP GAUGE or Gauge Blocks
SLIP GAUGES or Gauge Blocks
• These are small blocks of alloy Steel.
• Used in the manufacturing shops as length standards.
• Not to be used for regular and continuous measurement.
• Rectangular blocks with thickness representing the dimension of the
block the cross section of the block is usually 32 mm * 9 mm.
• To build any given dimension it is necessary to identify a set of box which
are put together.
• Number of blocks used always be the smallest.
• Generally the top and bottom slip gauges in the pile are 2 mm wear
gauges . This is so that they will be the only ones that will wear down,
and it is much cheaper to replace two gauges than a whole set.
• Least count 0.001 mm.
• Used to measure height and gap.
DIAL INDICATOR
• Dial indicator converts a linear displacement into a radial movement to measure over
a small range of movement for the plunger.
• The typical list count that can be obtained with suitable gearing (rack and pinion) dial
indicators is 0.01 mm to 0.001 mm.
• It is possible to use the dial indicator as a comparator by mounting it on a stand at any
suitable height.
• APPLICATIONS
• Workpiece alignment
• To identify lateral run out
• For calibrating machine
• To measure height difference
• To detect deformations
• Checking positional error ex- alignment , squareness, parallelism
• Detect geometrical error ex- Taper , roundness ovality
