PROJECT WORK ASSIGNMENT FOR STUDENTS
National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) is a permanent institute of the Indian Council of Medical
Research (ICMR), under the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,
Govt. of India. The Institute has the mandate to develop the sciences of epidemiology and biostatistics
and to strengthen the human resource base in epidemiology and biostatistics. The Institute provides
training opportunities in epidemiology for medical and paramedical workers; helps to develop human
resource in the field of epidemiology through education; conducts and supports operational research
and health systems research. There is also an emphasis on developing links with local medical colleges
and educational institutions for pursuing researchable areas of mutual interests. NIE runs an ICMR
School of Public Health and has been conducting several training programmes including the Master of
Public Health course in Epidemiology and Health Systems, and the Post Graduate Diploma in HIV
Epidemiology which are affiliated courses of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and
Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum. NIE is recognised by SCTIMST for PhD in Epidemiology and
by the University of Madras for Ph.D. in Statistics, Epidemiology and Sociology.
I. NIE desires to offer ‘short-term project cum training’ opportunities for the students in the
following disciplines:
1. Epidemiology (Max. 4 at anytime)
2. Statistics (Max. 4 at anytime)
3. Social Sciences (Max. 2 at anytime)
4. Operational Research (Max. 2 at anytime)
5. Laboratory Science (Max. 4 at anytime)
Guidelines:
On-line applications should be submitted as per the schedule given below:
a) For lab based projects
Application period Placement period
June– August November – January
August – October February – April
b) For other projects, applications have to be submitted 6 months prior to proposed start of the
project work.
Eligibility Criteria
1. The candidate should be studying MBBS/ MD/MPH/ M.Sc (Bio statistics/ medical statistics/ Med.
Sociology/ Microbiology, Biotechnology/ MLT/ Nutrition) / MSW/ MA (Social work)/ /B.Tech (BT)/
M.Tech (BT) from State/Central Government/MCI/AICTE/UGC - recognized University/ College/Institute.
2. The application must be forwarded by the Principal / Head of Department of the college, along with the
necessary enclosures. The list of required enclosures is mentioned on the application form.
3. The application form submitted in the prescribed proforma ‘should reach NIE’ within the stipulated time-
frame for the laboratory-based programmes. All applications received after closing date (last working day
of the specified month) will not be considered.
4. The applications will be scrutinized by the Student Project Coordination Committee (SPCC) of NIE.
5. The decision of the committee will be final and selected candidates will be intimated individually and the
selection list will be posted on the NIE website.
6. Selected candidates will be assigned to NIE scientists and faculty designated by the Director NIE.
7. Fee payable by the students (by D.D. after selection)
I. For laboratory based project assignments
a. Upto 3 months : Rs,15,000/-
b. Upto 6 months : Rs.25,000/-
II. For all other project assignments
a. Upto 3 months : Rs,10,000/-
b. Upto 6 months : Rs.20,000/-
General
1. Applications with incomplete information will not be considered.
2. Applications for lab based programmes received before the stipulated period or after the closing date will not
be entertained.
3. The selection of candidates will be based on the past academic record and availability of the supervisor.
4. Preference will be given to students of Government institutions.
5. The selected candidates will be informed by email.
6. Fees collected will be utilized for project related expenses (Purchase of lab consumables, sample collection,
study related travel, printing, photocopying, other documentation, publication costs etc.).
7. The institute will NOT provide Hostel/ Accommodation facilities. The candidates will have to make their
own arrangements for accommodation and local travel during the project period.
8. All the students admitted will have to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations of the institute.
9. Students admitted will work under the direct supervision of the Scientist/ Faculty nominated by the Director,
NIE.
10. The students completing assigned research work successfully will be issued a project completion certificate
by the Director, NIE.
12. All IPR arising from the project work will belong to NIE, Chennai. The concerned student will be given due
credit in publications arising out of his/ her work at NIE.
13. Students will be encouraged to publish the research work carried out under the guidance of their supervisors
at NIE. All institutional supervisory staff members who have made significant contribution to the research
work of the student will be entitled for authorship on the papers (as per the latest ICMJE authorship
guidelines).
