(1) An I/O bank is a group (16 maximum) of 1769 I/O modules with a single power supply. Eight I/O modules (maximum) can be located on either side of the supply.
1769-ADN DeviceNet™ Adapter

1769-ADN DeviceNet Adapter System Capabilities

Capacity
The 1769-ADN DeviceNet adapter can communicate with up to 30 Compact I/O modules on a single DeviceNet node.
You can have a maximum of three banks (1) of I/O connected with up to two communication expansion cables.
The adaptor supports a total of:
• 180 words of input data from the I/O modules
• 180 words of output data to the I/O modules
• 724 words of configuration data for the I/O modules
A typical 16-point input module uses one input word, and a typical 16-point output uses one input and output word.
Configuration Rules
10 The adapter must be the first and left-most module in the system (the first module of Bank 1).
I/O banks must be connected using a bus communication cable (e.g. 1769-CRL1).
Each bank of I/O must have its own power supply.
Each module type has its own distance rating (the number of modules from the power supply). Each module must be within its distance rating.
The 1769-ADN adapter has a distance rating of four, therefore the adapter must be within four modules of the power supply.
I/O modules are not required between either the adapter and an end cap or, between the power supply and an end cap.
An end cap terminator (e.g. 1769-ECR or 1769-ECL) must be used on the last I/O bank.
Address slots contiguously left-to-right within each bank. (Power supplies, cables, and end caps do not use an address.)
(1) A bank of I/O can have a maximum of 16 modules with a maximum of eight on either side of the power supply, depending upon module loading of the power supply. The
maximum amount of current each bank supports in one direction (either side of the power supply ) is: 2A at 5Vdc and 1A at 24V dc. See “Using the Power Supply in a Compact
System” on page 20.

(1) Typical Loading Resistor - To limit the effects of leakage current through solid state outputs, a loading resistor can be connected in parallel with your load. Use a 5.6K ohm,
½ watt resistor for transistor outputs, 24V dc operation.
(2) Surge Suppression - Connecting surge suppressors across your external load extends the life of the triac outputs. For additional details, refer to Industrial Automation Wiring
and Grounding Guidelines, Allen-Bradley publication 1770-4.1.
(3) Recommended Surge Suppression - Use a 1N4004 diode reverse-wired across the load for transistor outputs switching 24V dc inductive loads. For additional details, refer

Compact I/O Modules

Analog I/O Modules

Compact I/O’s analog modules provide 14-bit plus sign maximum
resolution, making them an excellent choice in applications where the need
to detect small changes in the analog input is vital.

Similarly, Compact I/O analog modules can be used in applications where

accuracy is crucial. The modules share a high accuracy rating of ±0.35% of
full-scale accuracy in the current mode. In the voltage mode, the 1769-IF4
provides ±0.2 and the 1769-OF2 ±0.5% of full-scale accuracy at 25°C.

Compact I/O offers two analog I/O choices: 17

• 1769-IF4 – 4-channel current or voltage input
• 1769-OF2 – 2-channel current or voltage output

Each channel on both the 1769-IF4 and 1769-OF2 modules has the ability
to be individually configured for either analog current (4 to 20 mA or 0 to
20 mA) or voltage (±10V dc, 0 to 10V dc, 0 to 5V dc or 1 to 5V dc) input/
output. This provides application flexibility, reduces stock inventory and
reduces the learning curve.

1769 Power Supplies and Cables

1769 Power Supplies and

Cables
There are two 1769 power supply options,
the 1769-PA2 and 1769-PB2. Just double
the width of a standard 1769 I/O module,
these power supplies give you the ability to
distribute bus/system power to your
compact I/O modules from either side.

Features and Benefits

Green power available LED on each power supply. The LED
provides visible indication that the power supply is operating.

Power supplies have upper and lower panel mounting tabs, as well
as latches for DIN rail mounting. Upper and lower panel mounting
tabs and DIN latches allow true front insertion and removal. DIN rail
or panel mounting capability meets the needs of a world-wide market.

Terminal identification diagrams on each power supply. Terminal

20 identification diagrams are located on each power supply, making
terminal identification easier.

Barrier-type terminal blocks provided on all power supplies. Each

terminal block features a barrier on three sides of each terminal to help
Fuse prevent accidental shorting of field wiring.

Power supply terminal blocks have finger-safe covers. This style of

terminal block meets U.S. and European market needs.

Front access replaceable fuse with cover protects the power supply
from most short circuit conditions. Clear fuse cover allows the
operator to visually inspect the fuse while it protects the operator from
potential shock hazards.

Using the Power Supply in a Compact System

Use the 1769-PA2 and 1769-PB2 Expansion Power Supplies to increase your system’s capacity for adding I/O modules.

Example Configuration: 1769-ADN DeviceNet Adapter and 11 I/O Modules

I/O Bank 1

A 1769 I/O power supply is limited in the amount of +5V dc and +24V dc current it can supply to the modules in its
I/O bank(1). These limits depend on the catalog number (e.g. 1769-PA2) of the power supply. A bank of modules should
not exceed the current limits of the I/O bank power supply. Refer to the Compact 1769 Expansion I/O Power Supplies
Installation Instructions.

See “1769-ADN DeviceNet Adapter System Capabilities” on page 10 for more guidelines on using the power supply
within an I/O bank.

(1) An I/O bank is a group of 1769 I/O (16 modules maximum) and a single 1769 I/O power supply.
1769 Power Supplies and Cables

Considerations for System Expansion using Power Supplies and Cables

To validate your system, the total 5V dc current and 24V dc current consumed must be considered. The I/O modules
must be distributed, such that the current consumed from the left or right side of the power supply never exceeds 2A at
5V dc and 1.0A at 24V dc.

The following worksheet is provided to assist in system expansion validation using 1769-PA2 and -PB2 Power Supplies
with 1769-CRR1, -CRR3, -CRL1, -CRL3, -CLL1, and -CLL3 Bus Communication Expansion Cables. Expansion
power supplies must be used with the expansion cables when the power supply current is exceeded and another bank of I/
O is required. Only one power supply may be used on an I/O bank. Using two expansion power supplies on the same
bank may damage a power supply and may result in unexpected operation.
21
Use the worksheet as a general guide to account for the amount of 5V dc and 24V dc current consumed by each bank of
I/O in your system. For greater detail, refer to Compact I/O Power Supplies and Expansion Cables Technical Data,
publication 1769-TD001A-US-P.
