Section A (100 Marks)

Question 1 (50 Marks)

A survey of a random sample of 300 grocery shoppers in Kimberley found that the mean value of their
grocery purchases was R78. Assume that the population standard deviation of grocery purchase values is
R21. Find the 95% confidence limits for the average value of a grocery purchase by all grocery shoppers
in Kimberley. (95% from the z table is 1.96)

Question 2 (25 marks)

Two groups are taught mathematics; for each group a different teaching method is used
Group 1 Group 2
N 12 3
Mean (x) 85 81
Standard dev (s) 4 5

a) Find at 95% CI the difference between the two population means, assuming the populations are
approximately normally distributed with equal variances. [8 Marks]
b) Find at 90% CI the difference between the two population means, assuming the populations are
approximately normally distributed with equal variances. [8 Marks]
c) Find and interpret the length of the CI at 95% [4 Marks]
d) Find and interpret the length of the CI at 90% [5 Marks]

Question 3 (25 marks)

A Coca Cola representative randomly selects and records the sales he made over a 14 day period. Use the
following sample data to answer the following questions:
130 140 145 172 196 135 212 225 203 133 140 218 185 140

a) Calculate the three measures of central location and explain your result for each measure (rounded
off to one decimal).
b) Calculate the interquartile range (rounded off to two decimals).
c) Find the standard deviation (rounded off to two decimals).
d) Calculate the skewness and explain your result (rounded off to two decimals).

Section B (100 Marks)

Question 4 (25 marks)

List and Discuss the six Probability Rules for calculating Standard Normal Probability Distributions

Question 5 (25marks)
Toss a fair coin three times.
List the random variable values on a distribution table [5 Marks]
Calculate a) the random variable probability [10 Marks]
As well as b) the cumulative probability [10 Marks]

Question 6 (25 marks)

6.1 A survey of executives showed that 38% of them regularly read the Sunday Times, 22% read the Cape
Argus and 35% read the City Press. 11% read both the Sunday Times and Cape Argus. What is the
probability that an executive reads the Sunday Times given they read the City Press?

6.2 The probability that a pharmacist owned a PC is 0.82 and the probability that a pharmacist owned a
Stero set is 0.2 and probabilities of both is 0.65.
If the pharmacist owned a TV, what is the probability that the same pharmacist also owned a PC

Question 7 (25 marks)

a. You are asked to comment on the shape of the distribution, given the mean of 35, mode
of 27, and median of 32. The distribution will be:
a) Symmetric.
b) Skewed to the right.
c) Skewed to the left.
d) No distribution.
b. According to the empirical rule, when the mean and standard deviation are known, and
the histogram is bell-shaped:
a) 99.7% of all observations fall within one standard deviation from the mean.
b) 95% of all observations fall within three standard deviations from the mean.
c) 99.7% of all observations fall within three standard deviations from the mean.
d) 68% of all observations fall within two standard deviations from the mean.
c. Assume that the marks for students have a mean of 65 and a standard deviation of 11.2.
The histogram for the marks was bell-shaped, and all data fall within one standard
deviation of the mean. This will be interpreted as :
a) 68% of the student's marks lie between 53.8 and 76.2.
b) 68% of the student's marks lie between 11.2 and 65.
c) 95% of the student’s marks lie between 53.8 and 76.2.
d) 95% of the student's marks lie between 11.2 and 65.
d. Assumed that the P (A) = 0.35, and P (B) = 0.45. The two events “A” and “B” are
assumed to be mutually exclusive, when:

c) P( A or B) = P( A) +P (B) –P(A and B)
d) P (A/B) = P (A and B).
