OBJECTIVES
Explain what is an outline.
Familiarize the guidelines in writing an outline.
Create an outline reading texts in various disciplines.

2
OUTLINE
OUTLINE
An outline is a map of your
essay or your blueprint. It
shows what information each
section or paragraph will
contain, and in what order.
Most outlines use numbers
and/or bullet points to arrange
information and convey points.

4
OUTLINE
An outline is a design to follow
when writing a structure, a
discourse, or an article. It
arranges a material in a logical
way into main ideas,
supporting ideas, and
supporting details.
5
OUTLINE
It allows the writer to understand
how he/she will connect
information to support the thesis
statement and the claims of the
paper. It provides the writer with a
space to consider ideas easily
without needing to write complete
paragraphs or sentences.

6
IMPORTANCE OF AN OUTLINE
An outline allows the writers to
categorize main points, to
organize the paragraphs into
an order that makes sense,
and to make sure that each
idea/paragraph can be fully
developed. 7
IMPORTANCE OF AN OUTLINE
Essentially, it prevents the writer
from getting stuck when
performing the actual writing of
the essay.

• A sentence outline is written in full sentence while a topic
outline is in words or phrases.

10
GUIDELINES WRITING OF OUTLINE
1. Place the title at the center above the outline.
2. Every level of the outline must have at least two items
(I and II, A and B, 1 and 2).
3. Put a period after each numeral and letter.
4. Indent each new level of the outline.
5. All items of one kind (Roman numerals, capital letters, Arabic
numerals) should line up with each other.
6. Capitalize the first letter of each item.
7. The terms Introduction, Body, and Conclusion do not have to
be included in the outline. They are not topics; they are merely
organizational units in the writer’s mind. 11

12
GUIDELINES WRITING OF OUTLINE
Once you have settled on a thesis statement and your main
supporting ideas, you can write a formal outline, creating the
“skeleton” of your essay. Looking at your ideas this way you can
ensure that:
• Your main points are on-topic and directly support your thesis
statement.
• Your main points are logically organized.
• Your most important ideas are emphasized, and your less
important ideas are subordinated.
• Your main points have enough and relevant supporting
evidence.

AN OUTLINE THAT IS DONE IS FULL SENTENCES. IT FORCES PART OF
THE ESSAY TO BE WRITTEN OUT IN SENTENCES BEFORE THE FIRST
DRAFT. FURTHER, IT EXPRESSES THE SPECIFIC AND COMPLETE IDEA
THAT THAT SECTION OF THE PAPER WILL COVER AS PART OF THE
OVERALL THESIS.

17
SENTENCE OUTLINE

Writing an outline for an essay helps you plan and keeps
you organized. It can also make writing the essay feel
more manageable. It will give students to be organized.
Outlining will help construct and organize ideas in a
sequential manner and thoughtful flow. Doing so allows you
