Objective : This course is designed to develop the basic concept of students in the area of calculus.
A student has to study this course because the contents of the course are very much
applicable in all branches of Science and Engineering. In this course, students will
learn about the concept of Function, Limit and continuity of a Function,
Differentiability of a function. From this they will be able to know how to find the rate
of change, the equation of tangent to a curve at a point, the maxima and minima of
functions. They will also know the technique of finding the equations of Asymptotes
and curvature of curves, which has a wide application in different fields. They will also
study Integral Calculus and their simple applications: Rectilinear Motion, Average
Value, Area between two curves. They will also learn how to evaluate the volume of a
solid using double and triple integration. In this course the students will also study
Improper integrals and then Beta and Gamma functions. They will know the technique
of finding the volume and surface area of solids of revolution.

Learning : On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to:
Outcomes
⮚ Recognize properties of function and their graphs;
⮚ Understand the domain and range of function;
⮚ Sketch graphs using function;

⮚ Able to understand the meaning and difference between 1st and second order
derivative and their uses;
⮚ Use the basic rules of differentiation in order to find derivative of products and
quotients;
⮚ Find maxima and minima, critical points and inflection points of functions and
to determine the concavity of curves;
⮚ Perform accurately definite and indefinite integration using method of
substitution, integration by parts;
⮚ Understand and apply the integration in different branches of mathematics and
physics;

Course Contents : 1. Differential Calculus and

2. Integral Calculus
Description : The following topics will be covered throughout the semester.

of differentiation; Analysis of Function: Function increasing, Function decreasing, Concavity of
a curve, Points of Inflection; Applications of Derivative; Maxima and Minima of a functions;
Indeterminate Forms; Successive differentiation and Leibniz’s theorem, Function of two or more
Variables: Partial Derivatives, Euler’s theorem on homogenous function; Rolle’s Theorem;

Integral Calculus :

Integration by the method of substitution, by parts. Integration of rational functions by partial

fractions, Definite integrals and its properties and use in summing series. Beta function and
Gamma function. Applications of definite integrals: Area under a plane curve and area of a region
enclosed by two or more curves in Cartesian co-ordinate system, volumes of solids generated by
revolution [disk & washer method], volumes of hollow solids of revolution by shell method,
multiple integrals [double integration] with application; Jacobeans.
