English Grammar Practice Questions
English Grammar Practice Questions
INTRODUCTION
There are two ways of relating what a person has said: direct and indirect. In direct speech we
repeat the original speaker’s exact words:
He said, ‚I have lost my umbrella.‛
Remarks thus repeated are placed between inverted commas, and a comma is placed
immediately before the remark. Direct speech is found in conversations in books, in plays and in
quotations. In indirect speech we give the exact meaning of a remark or a speech, without necessarily
using the speaker’s exact words:
He said (that) he had lost his umbrella.
There is no comma after say in indirect speech. ‘that’ can usually be omitted after say and tell +
object. But it should be kept after other verbs: complain, explain, object, point out, protest etc. Indirect
speech is normally used when conversation is reported verbally, though direct speech is sometimes
here to give a more dramatic effect. When we turn direct speech into indirect, some changes are
usually necessary.

had to is also possible in reported speech, but this is really the past of have to, not must.
He said, ‚I have to go. I have an appointment in half an hour‛ He said that he had to go
because he had an appointment in half an hour.
Past modal verbs (could, might, ought to, should, used to, etc. ) do not normally change in reported
speech.

He said, ‚I would help him if I could‛. He said that he would help him if he could.
He said, ‚You needn’t wait‛. He said that I needn’t wait.

QUESTION TAGS
Question tags are short questions at the end of statements.
They are mainly used in the speech when we want to
• Confirm that something is true or not
• To encourage the reply from the person we are speaking to.
Question tags are formed with the auxiliary or modal verbs from the statement and
the appropriate subject.
A positive statement is followed by the negative question tag.
1. You are an expert, aren’t you?
2. I am a doctor, aren’t I?
3. You are Indian, aren’t you?
A negative statement is followed by positive question tag.
➢ He will never know, will he?
➢ Ann hasn’t cleaned the plates, has she?
➢ This won’t do perfectly, will it?
➢ My car is not a new model, is it?
We often use question tags when we expect the listener to agree with our statement
in this case. When the statement is positive we can use negative question tag. If
the statement is negative, we can use the positive question tag.
Formation
If there is an auxiliary verb in the statement, we use it to form the question tag.
➢ I am late, ..................
➢ The boy is from Kottayam ,
1➢ Anu and Manu will arrive tomorrow,
➢ The painters are cleaning the wall,
➢ The mechanic is repairing the car,
➢ We can’t stay here,
➢ You have been driving fast,
➢ London is not a big city,
➢ There is fish for our lunch,
➢ Computer games are not good for children,
➢ These are not easy questions,
➢ My sister has been living in London for 10 years,
➢ They have been arranging a party for us,
When the verb in the main sentence is in the simple present, we form the question
tag with do / does
➢ Dogs like meat, don’t they?
➢ They watch football, don’t they?
➢ Rifanan plays cricket, doesn’t he?
If the verb is in the simple past we form the tag with did
Mohan played cricket, didn’t he?
We liked to spend our time there, didn’t they?
Mohan played cricket, didn’t he?
Sheba wrote a letter, didn’t he?
2.When the statement contains a word with a negative meaning, the question
tag needs to be positive.
