1 Foreword

®
The EC725 is a medium weight twin engine helicopter (11 tons class) with outstanding
® ®
performance that belongs to the famous SUPER PUMA / COUGAR family. Over 860 units, with
total flight time in excess of 4,800,000 Flight Hours have been delivered to date.

The EC725 is a powerful and fast helicopter with long range capabilities. It has a very large useful
volume and accommodates various seating arrangements up to 29 troops in a spacious cabin and
2 crew members.
®
Technical advancements developed by Airbus Helicopters on the EC725 include modular design
of the mechanical assemblies, use of composite materials, state of the art avionics, including LCD
Multi-Functions Displays, Vehicle Monitoring System and Automatic Flight Control System.

The EC725 also incorporates the new generation Turbomeca MAKILA 2A1 power plant that
provides high performance and maximum safety, thanks to its fully redundant dual channel FADEC
system and blade shedding technology.

The EC725 can be equipped with a full de-icing system compliant with FAR/JAR 29 regulations,
permitting flight in icing conditions.

State of the Art Autopilot

The Automatic Flight Control System is a 4-axis dual duplex digital auto-pilot, fully integrated with
the avionics and offering full operationality after failure.

The complete set of cruise/navigation and approach upper modes is proposed including envelope
protection and extended mission effectiveness with SAR modes as an option.

The AFCS comprises two (duplex architecture) Automatic Flight Control Computers (AFCCs) which
are linked to the MFDs and controlled by two control panels located within close reach of each
crew member, and several stick buttons. Each AFCC includes 2 separate processing units (dual
architecture) which self-monitor themselves. In case of failure, the standby AFCC takes full control
over the actuators and resumes the operation.

EC725 is basically equipped with the Ground Speed Mode (GSPD) on the Automatic Flight Control
System. This unique capability, derived and proven from the EC225/725 Search and Rescue
Automatic hover modes, will provide unmatched stability and precision at low speeds. With the
"upper modes" engaged on the AFCS, the ground speed mode may be selected by the pilot during
the final phase of the standard offshore approach. The pilot can select the final ground speed to as
low as a hover. This unique feature brings the helicopter safely all the way to the Landing Decision
Point (LDP). This new feature is a result of Airbus Helicopters policy of constant innovation
dedicated to enhancing Flight Safety and the continual improvement of the operating capabilities of
its products.

Vibration reduction

EC725 vibration level is the lowest of all the helicopters in its class.

This major comfort asset has been achieved thanks to the new 5-bladed rotor and a state-of-the-
art Active Vibrations Control System (AVCS).

This system significantly reduce helicopter vibrations by applying a counteracting force through 3
actuators.

2.8 Mission Design Features

EC725 is the most adapted helicopter for Special Operations, Personel Recovery and Combat
SAR.

The EC725 Caracal is the last born of the COUGAR family. It has been developed jointly with
French Air Force for the most demanding mission, the Combat Search and Rescue.

This cooperation has given birth to the most advanced helicopter now in operation for
Combat SAR, SAR and Special Operations.

Technical Data

Reference in Europe for Combat SAR, the French Air Force was looking for a helicopter which
would comply with the most demanding requirements, to warranty the success of a mission
performed in enemy area. The major requirements from French Air Force were:

 A very short time from the ground alert to flight

 Long range and high payload
 All weather capability and fully autonomous navigation system
 High level of systems redundancy and high survivability to bullet impacts
 State of the art “Man-Machine Interface” not only to facilitate crew work, and so, highly
improve situation awareness, giving crews elements to take the best decision, but also
ease training and conversion programs.
 Forward sliding windows for both sides firing machine guns without interfering at the main
doors during hoist, fast roping, rappelling operations or with any external fuel tank.
 Maintenance as light as possible to gain on availability

In order to comply with those requirements, a recommended configuration has been built based on
Airbus Helicopters know-how and latest development for SAR/CSAR missions.

 Dual 115V AC electrical hoist installation  7.62mm Machine Gun

 High Performance Electro Optical System  Digital Moving Map
 High Intensity Search Light  Inertial Navigation System
 Auxiliary fuel tank (990 l)  Infra red suppressors
 Armouring  Electronic Warfare System

4 Mission Configuration

The EC725 is a safe, reliable, powerful and versatile helicopter able to perform a wide spectrum of
missions.

Airbus Helicopters proposes a recommended minimum equipment list of optional equipement

corresponding to a Tactical Transport / Utility mission configuration that can be completed with
additional equipment from the “further available equipment” list in order to satisfy other operational
needs corresponding to other missions such as :

 Special Operations, Personel Recovery

 Combat Search and Rescue
 CASEVAC & MEDEVAC
 Maritime Surveillance
 Air to ground support
 Utility & Water Bombing

Please take note that some equipment can be incompatible with other. Any modification and/or
complement of the proposed mission configuration must be done with assistance of an Airbus
Helicopters sales representative.

The proposed mission configuration is done by Airbus Helicopters using its years of experience in
making helicopters and in coordination with different customers around the world.

Classic Support
The classical support consists in an Initial Provisioning package to support aircraft operation. This
package includes Tools, Test Equipment, but also spare parts necessary to carry-out aircraft
inspections and reparable parts to cover immediate replacement when necessary.
For reparable parts, the required level of operational availability determines the part numbers and
the quantity of parts needed, and therefore the investment to be put in place.
In addition to this Initial Provisioning package, a classical Repair & Overhaul service mode is
proposed and consists in parts return to Airbus Helicopters for repair or overhaul when needed.
Airbus Helicopters will perform an appraisal and quote the work to be done. Work shall be
performed upon acceptance of the estimate.
With this type of classical support package, Customer keeps the responsibility to monitor the
component R&O activity, manage obsolescence, and maintain the right inventory level on site.

Standard Exchange
The Standard Exchange consists in replacing a defective part with a serviceable and
interchangeable part within 48 hours. This service is available for dynamic components, blades and
equipment.

Guaranteed Turn-Around-Time (TAT) program

Airbus Helicopters offers contracts covering a list of specific components and for which repair or
overhaul price and Turn-Around-Times are committed. In exceptional cases, should the contractual
date of delivery be impossible to reach, Airbus Helicopters will provide the Customer with a
standard exchange for the agreed repair or overhaul price.

Unscheduled Maintenance Insurance Plan (UMIP)

With the UMIP, Airbus Helicopters gives the customer the option to secure unscheduled
maintenance costs while remaining responsible for the scheduled events (overhaul, life limited part
replacement). Price for this service is calculated per flight hour.

The UMIP service includes unscheduled component repair within 24H through Standard Exchange
based on a dedicated inventory. This service is available for dynamic components, blades and
equipment

Parts By the Hour (PBH)

The Parts by the Hour (PBH) service is a comprehensive program that offers and balances at the
same time guaranteed maintenance costs, reduced inventory and minimized helicopter downtime.
This service is intended for Customers looking for total cost control and high level of aircraft
availability. Price for this service is calculated per flight hour.

The PBH service includes component unscheduled repairs component overhauls as well as Life
Limited part replacement. Parts replacement is guaranteed within 24H through Standard Exchange
