B. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

1. Rationale
The raising of native chicken is an integral part of the farming system of the
Filipino as they are the main source of eggs and meat for their adaptability to local agro-
climatic conditions, hardiness, ability to utilize farm- by –products and resistance to
diseases. There are some breeds such as the Camarines, Darag, Manok Bisaya and
Zampen are ideal for egg production. A native hen of the said breeds can produce 120
eggs in a year and the mortality rate is significantly low. Generally, chicken, lay eggs up
to four (4) times every year, but if they make some interventions up to six (6) times in
an optimized poultry cycle.
Raising native chicken for profit require provisions for proper nutrition. Just like
any animal species, they need essential nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, fats,
vitamins and minerals to survive, grow and reproduce. However, in cases where feed
cost becomes too high, there is a need to find for alternative feedstuffs which would
likewise provide birds with the essential nutrients they need, but are less expensive and
are abundantly found locally. These alternative feeds may serve as supplemental feeds
where they can partially reduce the number of feeds given without compromising the
quality of feeds being supplemented. Supplemental feeding helps augment the nutrients
from the chicken’s natural feeds and help in promoting the chicken’s optimum
performance. Some of the common forage species used as feed supplement include
Madre de Agua and malunggay.
Malunggay (Moringa oleifera) or horse radish tree has many uses and great
economic importance. The essential nutrient contents of Moringa leaves/twigs such as
Vitamin A & B vitamin, calcium, iron, copper, Sulphur and protein of 9.4 g/ 100 g dried
leaf sample (Wikipedia) and its ability to absorb and neutralize toxic elements in the
feed could justify its significance as one of the major local feedstuffs (Lanaon, 2007).
Fresh Moringa leaves have a moisture content of 75 – 80%, while dried leaves have a
moisture content of less than 10 %. The leaves of the Moringa are the preferred part for
use in animal diets as leaf meal.
Trichantera gigantea is a fodder tree, also known as Nacedero or Madre de Agua.
The leaves of the trichantera are a potential source of protein with 18-22% and
apparently most of these are true proteins and has a good amino acid balance (Rosales,
et al, 1989). It has 2.8 % crude fat, 13.4 % crude fiber, 19.7 % ash, 37.0 % NFE. The
advantage of this tree is that the leaves can be readily fed to pigs, rabbits and native
chickens on fresh basis.
The research will be conducted to compare the effect of malunggay and
trichantera on the laying performance, hatchability and growth performance of the
Camarines strain of native chicken.
Mulberry leaves are used as feed for poultry, livestock and poultry. They can be
eaten fresh or dried, crushed and used in combination with other feeds. However,
because the moisture content of fresh mulberry leaves is slightly higher than that of
grasses or other leaves, it is generally about 70%. The proportion of mulberry leaves in
the diet should not be too large, and should be used with other feeds. The mulberry
leaves are dried, crushed, and added to chicken feed at a ratio of 5%-10%. The color of
egg yolk can be significantly improved, the quality of eggs is improved, the number of

2
eggs is increased, the flavor of chicken is improved, and the amount of ammonia
emissions in chicken manure is reduced.
Feeding cattle and sheep with dried mulberry leaves, or adding slightly crushed
dried mulberry leaves to pig feed at a ratio of 25%-30%, or adding it to rabbit feed at a
ratio of 10%-15%, showed physical enhancement, Increased growth, improved meat
quality, and reduced feed costs.
Mulberry grows well in the tropics and subtropics, and is reported to have
excellent nutritional value as forage. It is grown extensively for its leaves, which are
used for raising silkworms in the sericulture industry. Mulberry leaves are rich in
protein (15–35%), minerals (2.42–4.71% Ca, 0.23–0.97% P) and metabolizable energy
(1,130–2,240 kcal/kg) with absence of or negligible anti-nutritional factors (Omar et al.,
1999; Sanchez, 2000; Saddul et al., 2004; Sarita et al., 2006). Mulberry leaves contain β-
carotene, which can be converted with varying efficiency by animals to vitamin A and
the xanthophylls, which can be a good source of the pigmentation of egg yolk (Moller et
al., 2000; Sarita et al., 2006).
The use of MLM for laying hens is possible by up to 10% without adversely
affecting egg production and egg quality. Furthermore, MLM may contribute to the
pigmentation of egg yolk and make the eggs more attractive to the consumer.

2. Objectives

General Objectives: To determine which of the following treatments were increase the
laying performance of Native Chicken using Trichantera (Trichantera gigantea),
Malunggay (Moringa oleifera) and Mulberry (Morus Alba).

Specific Objectives:
1. To measure the growth performance of Camarines Strain of Native Chicken pullets
using commercial feed (control group) and Trichantera (Trichantera gigantea),
Malunggay (Moringa oleifera) and Mulberry (Morus Alba) (as feed supplements
(experimental groups) in terms of:
a. body weight
b. size
2. To evaluate the lay performance of the control and experimental group.
3. To identify the percentage of eggs produced by the two-groups.
4. To come up with a cost-benefit analysis.

Expected Outputs per Objective

1. Increase the growth performance of Camarines Strain of Native Chicken using
trichantera, malunggay, and mulberry as feed supplement.
2. Increase the laying performance of Camarines Strain Native Chicken using
trichantera, malunggay and mulberry as feed supplement.

3. Review of Literature

Native Chicken in the Philippines is typically in the backyard of rural households.

They are small, active and sensitive and capable of great flight when frightened. The
hens are healthy, active with shiny feather a well-formed body that will produce a
satisfactory number of fertile eggs under normal backyard production. The native hen

3
produces 40 to 60 eggs in a year. However, when accorded with improved management
and fed with the quality and quantity of feed the native hen could produce 130 – 300
eggs per year.
Native chicken generally lay eggs up to four (4) times every year, but if make
some interventions up to six times in an optimized poultry laying cycle. The eggs will
hatch between 20 to 22 days of breeding with proper breeding and care native hens will
reach a weight of 850 grams or 1 kg by the time they are 130 to 140 days old.
There are few forms of native chicken found in the Philippines only few farmers
sell their native chicken in the market. Most of them prefers native chicken because it
does not require special care and feeds, but they have nutritious products that are free
from toxins compared to commercial broilers. On the other hand, native chicken is
simply fed with play, corn and even leftover, cooked rice. However, in most cases,
they are let loose and that they eat different plant leaves aside from what they get from
the soil when they go scratching (Catagan 1997)

NATIVE CHICKEN INVENTORY

Based on the data gathered by the Philippine Statistics Authority as of July
1,2017, the inventory of native/ improved chicken is 5.35% higher than last year’s
inventory of 3.04% and shared 45% of the total chicken inventory in the country, Bicol
region contributes 6.24% share of improved native chicken.

TRICHANTERA (MADRE DE AGUA)

Trichantera gigantea a non-leguminous species that has been introduced in the
country and is well accepted under local conditions. It has the ability to regenerate even
with repeated cuttings and can produce succulent leaves of high nutritive value.
Trichantera gigantea is a very well accepted by the animals because of its palatability.
The leaves of trichantera are a potential source of protein varying from 18-22-day
matter form and apparently most of these are true protein and has a good amino acid
balance (Rosales et al.,1989). It has 2.8 % crude fat 13.4 5 crude fiber,19.7 % ash, 37.0
NFE. The plant contains low levels of anti-nutritional factor (Rosales 1997). Some trials
investigated the potential of trichantera is moderately intensive poultry production. In
chicken up to 15% of the soybean protein (corresponding to 5.5 % of soybean meal in
the diet was substituted with trichantera leaf meat without negative effects on growth/
feed consumptions (Sarria et al., 1995).

MALUNGGAY (MORINGA OLEIFERA)

Malunggay leaves are valuable sources of protein for ruminants. However, the
protein content ranges from 15 % to more than 30 % DM as it depends on the maturity
stage and on the folder’s respective proportions of leaflets, petioles and stems, the latter
being much power in protein. Moringa leaves contain high level of minerals about 10 %
DM particularly CA & Fe. It contains high amount of a wide range of vitamins and niacin
(Reyes 2004; Yanny et al., 2006) as well as flavonoids which are known to be more
potent antioxidants than ascorbic acid. (Siddhuraju & Becker), 2003; (Makhar & Becker
1997). Moving leaf meals do not only serve as a protein source but also provide some
necessary vitamins, minerals and oxycaretenoids which cause yellow color of broiler
skin, shanks & egg yolk. Feeding chicken with Moringa leaves and seeds will improve
egg production.

4
Trichantera & malunggay are relatively abundant wherein it is planted not for
human consumption but also animal feed. It is readily available in the Albay Breeding
Station that can be mixed to poultry diets such as ducks, hens & even to small ruminants.
There have been some reports on the ingredients contained in the mulberry
leaves and branches of the feed mulberry. Mulberry leaves contain 15%-30% crude
protein, 4%-10% crude fat, 8%-12% crude fiber, 30%-35% nitrogen-free extract, and
are rich in vitamins (C and B groups) and amino acids (Complete variety) and mineral
elements (there are mainly 8 species, among which the content of potassium, calcium,
iron, zinc and manganese is higher than that of corn or green alfalfa). It also contains
many biologically active substances (phytosterols, flavonoids, alkaloids and
polysaccharides, etc.).

MULBERRY LEAF (Morus alba)

Mulberry is a multi-functional plant and a great source of nutrients and
phytochemicals, which include flavonoids, which have antioxidant activity and phenolic
constituents with major active components of biological activities (Rebai et al., 2017).
According to Srivastava et al. (2006) Mulberry has also been established as functional
food due to health promotion and disease prevention. Mulberry leaves have been
proven to have pharmacological and biological properties, which include antibacterial,
antiviral, antitussive, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, antiatherogenic, diuretic and
antioxidant (Rebai et al., 2017). According to Tuigong et al. (2015), Mulberries grows
very fast when young, but the growth slows down later and rarely exceeds 15 meters.
The arrangement of leaves is alternate, simple and often lobed and serrated on the
margin. Lobes are mainly found in the juvenile shoots than on mature trees. Mulberry
can be established through stakes or seeds. Yields depend on variety and location. In a
quarter of an acre, it is possible to plant 3556 plants using a spacing of 5 x 2 feet.
Pruning is done once a year to a height of 1.5-1.8 m and allowed to grow with a
maximum of 8- 10 shoots at the crown. This allows more shoots to grow from the base.
In a six months period, the shoots are able to attain the height of 3 ft when three strong
shoots are selected. Pruning is done at 1 ft above the ground to create a
pruning/harvesting table (Sánchez, 2002).
Excellent results have been obtained with mulberry leaves as ruminant and non-
ruminant feed (Deshmukh et al., 1993; Oviedo et al., 1994; Gonzalez Diaz,
1996; Trigueros and Villalta, 1997). Information on feeding mulberry to chickens is
scarce but it has been successfully used at a level of 6% in diets of laying hens (Narayana
and Setty, 1977).

4. Methodology

Source and processing of different leaf meals. Fresh Madre de Agua (T.
gigantea), Malunggay (M. oleifera) and Mulberry (Morus Alba) with stems were
collected from established small-scale plantations in DA-ARDC (Albay Breeding Station
Cabangan, Camalig, Albay. The leaves were carefully separated from the stems, dried
under direct sunlight for about 4 hours and processed into leaf meal using hammer mill.
The Trichanthera Leaf Meal (TLM), Moringa Leaf Meal (MLM) and Mulberry (Morus
Alba) will be mixed with the commercial ration a day before the start of the feeding trial.
Dietary ration containing leaf meal from different plant sources were prepared weekly

5
and stored at room temperature

Experimental Birds. A total of 72 pullets that are more or less of the same age (at
least 4.5 months at stocking) and 12 roosters will be used as breeders in a breeding
ratio of 1:5. The birds will be selected based on traits like heathy and vigorous more or
less uniform in size and weight and body confirmation and free from any physical
abnormalities. Rooster should likewise be healthy, aggressive and show better growth
performance when compared with the average of the flock. Birds were weighed and
randomly transferred to the experimental cages to the feeding trial. The standard period
for gradual shifting of diet from pure commercial ration to experimental diets was
followed. The inclusion of 10% leaf meal into the grower and layer rations started on the
third quarter until they lay eggs. Birds were fed with the treatment diets twice a day,
7:00 AM and 3:00 PM, and fresh drinking water was provided at all times. After
weighing the birds individually as their initial weights, they were also weighed
individually in a weekly basis during experimental period. Feed intake was recorded
daily. Weight gained and Feed Conversion Ratio (FCE) was calculated at the end of the
experiment.

Experimental pen/cages. Construction of poultry house made of G.I sheets and

cyclone wire. The space allowance of each bird is a minimum of 1.75 square feet. It is
important to divide the housing to prevent fighting among the hens. Additional pens and
nests and other facilities will be made available for different treatments and
replications.

Facilities and equipment. The poultry house will be located in Cabangan, Camalig,
Albay at the farm site of Albay Breeding Station where there is lighting and water
facilities. Equipment’s and supplies like digital weighing scale, feeders, watering
troughs, plastic feed containers, egg trays, shovel, spade, hard broom, dust pan, record
book, calculator, etc. will be used in the study.

Experimental Design and Treatment. A total 72 chickens, 60 females and 12

males will be randomly distributed to four treatments each with three replications with
six birds per replicate (1 male and 5 female). The inclusion of 10% leaf meal into the
commercial ration was used as follows: T0 - Commercial ration, without supplement
(Control).

SCHEME A
T1 - Commercial ration with 10% Trichantera Leaf Meal (TLM)
T2- Commercial ration with 10% Moringa Leaf Meal (MLM)
T3 - Commercial feed ration with 10% Mulberry Leaf Meal (MBLM)

Legend:
CF – Commercial Feeds
TLM – Trichantera Leaf Meal
MLM – Moringa Leaf Meal
MBLM - Mulberry Leaf Meal

6
Feeding and water management. Pullets and roosters will be provided with the
same feeds at a feed allowance of 80 grams/ head/day to be given twice daily at around
7:00 o’clock in the morning and 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon. Pullets were fed grower
feeds for 2 months and layer for 7 to eight months containing 5% and 10% of dried
Trichantera, Malunggay, and Mulberry. All birds regardless of age will be provided with
sufficient amount of fresh drinking water through round plastic drinkers.

Waste Management. Chicken droppings will be collected every other day

throughout the duration of the study to prevent accumulation of manure within the pens
and fly infestation which may otherwise become carrier of diseases. Manure will be
piled in a nearby pit for composting purposes.

Health Management. Though native chicken shows certain degree of resistance to

common chicken ailments, they are not really 100% resistant to diseases, thus,
provisions for vaccination against common poultry diseases like new castle disease. fowl
pox will be considered. Deworming will also be done when they are 3 months old will be
repeated after a month or before onset of lay using betel nut or any commercially
available dewormers.
Birds showing signs of illness like loss of appetite, lameness, colds or has an
abnormal color and consistency of excreta will be isolated at once and will be placed in a
separate pen for treatment. In this way, possible contamination or transfer of the
disease to the healthy ones will be prevented. On the other hand, dead birds will be
removed immediately from the pen and will be buried.
Provisions for the use anti-stress formula (Vitamin E) in the drinking water will be
considered especially during stressful periods like vaccination, weighing and during
typhoons. Natural plant extracts from oregano leaves will be used during periods of
illness.

Egg Management. Eggs produced from all treatments will be marked with a pencil
to reflect the date it will be laid and the pen number where they will have obtained.

a. Egg Collection. This will be done every afternoon for all treatments leaving 1 or 2
dummy eggs in the nest to encourage hens to lay more eggs. Also it will prevent eggs
from being soiled or contaminated or broken, thus, the number of rejected eggs for
hatching will be reduced.
b. Egg Sorting. Eggs laid for the day will be weighed accordingly per replication
and will be sorted afterwards according to weight and size and it will be sold as
table eggs.
c. Egg Storage. Quality eggs will be placed in egg trays and will be stored in the
refrigerator or in a cool, dry place not later than 10 days.

Data to be gathered.

a. Average age of pullets at first lay – will be done by recording the age (in days)
of pullets when they lay their first egg.
b. Body weight of pullets at stocking (g) – will be done by individual weighing of
Pullets before putting them to their respective treatments to determine whether

7
body weight is directly associated with the onset of laying.
c. Egg weight (g) – will be done by weighing each egg using a digital scale and
recording the same in a record book design for the purpose.
d. Total egg production – will be obtained by recording the total number of eggs
produced per treatment.
e. Body weight of pullets using trichantera and malunggay feeds – will be taken
by subtracting the average initial weight of pullets at stocking from the start of
treatment.
f. Feed Consumption- will be done by recording the amount of feeds offered per
group (both for layers and rooster) per day and deducting the amount of feeds
spilled and left in the feeders.
g. Feed conversion efficiency (kgs) – will be computed by dividing the amount of
feeds consumed by the number of doze of eggs produced (for layers) or;

FCE (layers) = __total feeds consumed__

dozen of eggs produced

h. Morbidity rate – will be computed by dividing the number of birds affected with
diseases by the number pullets and multiplying it by 100 or:
Morbidity rate = number of sick birds x 100
number of birds at stocking

i. Mortality rate – will be computed by dividing the number of dead birds by the
number of birds at stocking and multiplying it by 100 or:
Mortality rate = number of dead birds X 100
number of birds produced

j. Other observations – will be done by recording other pertinent information like

weather condition, any unusual event or disturbances that might affect the
performance of the animals during the course of the study that might be useful in
the future.
k. Statistical Analysis. Data on egg production, and growth performance will be
analyzed using the Analysis of Variance in a Completely Randomized Design
(CRD) whereas, LSD Test / DMRT will be used to test the difference among all
possible treatment means, Coefficient of variation will be computed to measure
the degree of reliability of the experiment.
