“The importance of Reading Comprehension Towards the Student's Academic

Performances in Grade 10”

Why did we choose this topic?

It is because we have seen how majority of students tend to find it difficult to understand
and read English, leading students specifically in grade 10 level to undergo struggles
which gravely affects their academic performance and learning. We have come up with
this research topic as we witnessed their essay struggles in exams, how students tend
to use wrong grammar and vocabulary when answering and writing essays which
affects their scores and grades. Having to delve with this topic/issue, it doesn’t mean
that there is no room for improvement and change. The research we will be working on
will have the majority of how the pros and cons of “Reading Comprehension” and how it
influences on a student’s academic performance.

Reading comprehension
is the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. It relies on two,
interconnected abilities: word reading (being able to decode the symbols on the page)
and language comprehension (being able to understand the meaning of the words and
sentences).
Learning English involves many factors that would affect the process of learning
positively or negatively.
The main aim of reading comprehension is to reinforce the grammatical structure of the
learners and it can also improve their vocabulary.
Reading comprehension involves both perception and thought. Readers will use
background of knowledge, vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, and other strategies to
help them to understand a written text

- When we make sense of a text, however, we don’t just remember the exact
words and phrases we read. Rather, we form a mental model of what the text
describes by integrating the sense of the words and sentences into a meaningful
whole, like a film that plays in our head.
Why do we need to know about “Reading Comprehension”?

 Comprehension adds meaning to what is read. Reading comprehension

occurs when words on a page are not just mere words but thoughts and
ideas. Comprehension makes reading enjoyable, fun, and informative. It is
needed to succeed in school, work, and life in general.

 Without the knowledge of reading comprehension, people wouldn’t have the

skill to read word per word pages, thus understanding a certain language is
also a must.

Over-all benefits of reading comprehension:

 Enhanced brain activity - Unlike watching television or streamed entertainment,

reading requires focus. This engages the mind and stimulates more brain regions
than passive forms of entertainment.

 Improved vocabulary - By exposing students to new words, reading can expand

vocabulary. This has been shown in research, such as this 2015 study which
found that reading-related activities were the primary cause of vocabulary growth
from grades four to ten.
(Vocabulary - a list or collection of words or of words and phrases usually alphabetically
arranged and explained or defined) *Madungagan ang mga words na ma remember,
magamit, and understand sa students

 Developing critical thinking - Critical thinking is a kind of thinking in which you

question, analyze, interpret, evaluate and make a judgement about what you
read, hear, say, or write. The term critical comes from the Greek word kritikos
meaning “able to judge or discern”.

 Increased ability to understand others - Encountering different ideas also

helps us to understand others. Research has indicated that reading literary fiction
(fiction books with literary merit) enhances what researchers call ‘Theory of
Mind’, or the capacity to understand the mental state of others

 Exceeding Academic performance - Reading comprehension impacts

academic performance and success by indicating a correlation and effect
between students' reading comprehension and their academic achievement. The
better the learners' reading comprehension, the better their academic
performance. If students possess good reading habits, they can increase their
critical reasoning skills and ultimately have better academic outcomes. In
addition, even the reading of non-academic books enhances students' language
skills.
Background of Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is the process of constructing meaning by coordinating a

number of complex processes that include word reading, word and world knowledge,
and fluence (the ability to speak or write a language easily, well, and quickly). Readers
comprehend a text when they are able to communicate with a text. Reading
comprehension involves both perception and thought. Readers will use background of
knowledge, vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, and other strategies to help them to
understand a written text. It means reading is a process of communication between the
writer and the reader.

Reading comprehension refers to the cognitive processes involved in understanding

and extracting meaning from a text. It involves the execution and integration of various
processes, such as planning, attention, simultaneous processing, and successive
processing. Reading comprehension is essential for language and literature, as well as
developing a student's critical thinking and memory skills, focus and their ability to solve
problems — all necessary for every kind of student or professional. Background reading
involves reading works related to your topic, in order to get a bigger picture before
diving into the deeper research.
