PHILIPS Ultrasound Service Bulletin
Innovation and Support Services SB #: HD15-001
DATE: September 25, 2008 CN or CO #: N/A
TO: All Field Service Personnel Memo #: 207199
Author(s): Christopher Walton
SUBJECT: HD15 Service Tips & Product Issue
SCOPE: HD15 (Software Revision 1.0 and Cart Version A.0)
PROBLEM: This is an informational bulletin only. At first release, several HD15 issues
were identified that the Field should be aware of. In addition several
service tips were identified which should be communicated at first release.
CAUSE: Problems have been identified late in the program when there was
insufficient time to correct the issue and the IMS team determined the
issue could be handled either by Field communication, or by fixing the
issue in a later program. Also, during service reviews, product quality
testing, and manufacturing testing, service tips were generated which due
to the lateness of discovery are being communicated via this Service
Bulletin rather than thru the Service Manual. Causes vary per item and
will be covered in each item as appropriate.

BULGING If the Rear I/O panel is removed during a repair and the cables are not
PLASTICS DUE TO properly dressed, the plastics on the rear of the system may bulge outward
REAR I/O and result in poor appearance. To prevent this, ensure that the cables are
CABLES: properly dressed such that they do not press outward on the two side panel
enclosure, or push the Rear I/O back outwards away from the PC. This
bulging can also lead to scraping of the plastics when the control panel
assembly is moved up and down by the user.
CONTROL PANEL It is possible that occasionally the control panel may not lower to its lowest
INABILITY TO position, or may bind. Customers may say it doesn’t go down as far as it
LOWER TO used to. This problem can be corrected by:
LOWEST A. Hold in the release button, and press down on the yoke with a
POSITION: significant amount of weight, and pushing the panel down to its
lowest position.
B. Raise the mechanism to its highest position. Once this is done, the
problem should be corrected. (CR27124)

DICOM PRINTER If you configure DICOM printers with:
WILL NOT PRINT: • A BW printer set to the Color Printer SCP and
• A Color printer set to the B&W Printer SCP,
The system does not give the user any warning and will accept the
configuration.
When print jobs are executed by the system (in any mode), they fail with
Error ID: 1 and the print servers only receive a ping, but no images or data.
Solution is to send B/W images to B/W printer and Color to Color Printer.
(CR24931).
USB MEMORY Refer to APPENDIX A of this bulletin for a copy of the USB Guidance
DEVICE ISSUES document.
AND TIPS:
LIVE COMPARE: Page numbers “n/m” is incorrect while doing a live compare for imported
INCORRECT PAGE studies. This applies only to imported studies. All information is there
NUMBERING: just the page numbering may be off. (CR29143).
SCROLL BAR The Quick Review icon will show up when the system is frozen and quick
APPEARS review soft-key are provided for user to play the cine loop and change the
INOPERATIVE: start and end position of the quick review buffer. However, the Quick
Review icon is not appropriate when the system is in Panoramic Render
mode although the quick review buffer is also frozen in this state. The
presence of the Quick Review icon in Panoramic Render mode will
somehow distract user because user can do nothing with the quick review
buffer. They may interpret this as a broken scroll-bar. (CR29364)
RESPIRATION In a small percentage of customer situations, if customer is using
WRAP-AROUND respiration and ECG at the same time, and the respiration signal is large,
NON- the waveform may wrap around and the customer cannot adjust the
ADJUSTABLE: waveform. (CR29971)
POTENTIAL Some HD15 measurements use different text strings to identify
MEASUREMENTS measurements than the iE33. SR Code Values are too long for VR Rules
TRANSFER ISSUES and causes DICOM Protocol violation failure. This issue has a
TO XCELERA: workaround; user can repeat measurements on Xcelera; Measurements in
question are used by advanced Cardiac users, not necessarily most general
services HD15 users. (PD13410)

INCORRECT When setting the system up for specific languages, some languages require
LANGUAGE very specific setup steps. If the languages are not set up using specific
SETTINGS CAN steps, the system can exhibit problems such as font sizes being incorrect or
IMPACT SYSTEM: data entry boxes being cut off (specific problems vary depending on
languages). Solution is for FSE to follow exact steps as provided in the
installation procedures (Service Manual) for setting languages.
BLUE SCREEN On very rare occasions we have seen that when unplugging a memory
WHEN stick, the system may present a blue screen hang. This happens only with
UNPLUGGING USB the older non-NTSF file type memory sticks and should not be seen with
MEMORY STICK: newer memory media. (CR0028269)
SYSTEM If the customer is using “send-as-you go” transfer method, the system
SLOWDOWN could appear to be ‘sluggish’ or slow. This is because the data transfer
DURING DATA process is running in the background and using CPU resources. It is
TRANSFER: recommended to send in batch mode and to use compression in the transfer
syntax. (CR0030779)
FOOTSWITCH There is a chip in the footswitch that causes the footswitch to intermittently
MAY NOT BE not be detected in the port where it is plugged in. This is true for all
RECOGNIZED IN CX50/HD15 USB footswitches. The workaround is to unplug the
USB PORT: footswitch and plug it back in. Buying another footswitch will not solve
this problem. This issue is very seldom seen. (PD14103)
DELETE ALL JOBS If there is a DICOM print job in progress and the user goes into the queue
DURING and ‘Deletes All Jobs” while files are transferring, it can possibly crash the
TRANSFER CAN system. (PD14123)
CAUSE CRASH:

RE-ASSEMBLY OF When re-assembling the control panel (if lifted off of the system frame)
CONTROL PANEL use care not to allow the screw that comes into the bottom of the control

RST FAILURE The HD15 currently needs to have at least one Explora Module connected
WITH CERTAIN to the system in order to successfully pass a full run of RST. If a full run of
TRANSDUCER RST is run without at least one Explora Module installed in the system
CONFIGURATIONS: RST will fail calling out both FE Boards as being defective along with all
connector modules currently installed on the system. These failures would
be false. Please ensure that at least one Explora module is installed prior to
running a full run of RST on any system. The current minimum system
configuration being sold includes an Explora Module so the only time this
issue would be run into is during the troubleshooting of a reported
problem. For troubleshooting a suspected Connector Module problem the
individual Connector Module tests can be successfully run regardless of
what is currently installed in the system.

DEMO SYSTEM There is a known potential artifact that might be seen on some demo
ARTIFACT: systems. (See Figure 2). There are no errors in error log or RST. The
problem is caused by poor solder joints on Front End boards. These boards
were purged from our manufacturing line before customer systems were
built. Some early demo systems may contain these boards. If you see this
problem, replace the FE boards. (INV02701)

TIP: ACCESSING It can be difficult to access both RST and Simulation Mode on boot-up due
RST & to the short access window. Steps to reach this window easily are as
SIMULATION follows:
MODE ON BOOT- A. Turn on system power and watch various screens go by as follows:
UP: • PHILIPS (on blue screen)
• Intel screen
• PHILIPS (on black screen)
• HD15 Splash screen, followed by item B (about 60 seconds
from when you pressed the ON button)
B. You will then see a momentary “white flash” on the bottom 3rd of
screen. At that point begin pressing the control keys (CTL-ALT-R or
CTL-ALT-S) repeatedly in one second intervals at least 25 times and
the utility should launch. Do not hold-down the keys.

WINDOWS In the Service Menu, there is a Windows key for Control Panel. Sometimes
CONTROL PANEL when you press this key, you will not see the Control Panel dialog box
DOES NOT appear. This is because it has minimized on the bottom of the screen. To
ACTIVATE: be able to see the Control Panel, press the Windows “Explorer” key. Now,
you should be able to see the minimum Control Panel at the bottom of the
screen.
RST CAN There is a known issue with RST occasionally crashing upon exiting this
OCCASIONALLY utility. This bug will be fixed in an up-coming release. This should have
CRASH SYSTEM no customer or FSE impact other than an unexpected RESTART banner.
ON SHUT DOWN: (PD14489)
LOSS OF SYSTEM If while trying to repair a system the PCIO Board is replaced and the
S/N AND OPTIONS System’s SW is reloaded at the same time the system will now have a serial
CAN OCCUR: number of US00A00000. Once this occurs the Options file will no longer
work for this system nor will the Backup Options file. If there is a need to
replace the PCIO Board and reload the System’s SW it is advisable to do
them one at a time and not at the same time.
Note: If this has already occurred and the old PCIO is no longer available
a Change System S/N Code will need to be obtained from the Factory to
correct this issue.
DICOM PRINT In our in-house testing, we noted that the HD15 did not communicate
FAILURE ON properly with the Kodak 8700or 8900 series DICOM printer. There was no
KODAK 8700: error message other than the following:
• Printer status = null
• “Unable to retrieve printer status information. Abort requested.”
Further investigation revealed that this problem exists on the current HD11
products also. We have not received any complaints regarding this existing
problem. There is no solution or known workaround. If you experience
this problem please submit a 'Field Problem Report' (FPR) (CR30798)
RESTART Occasionally the HD15 product may experience a problem that leads to a
VERSUS ‘Restart” banner being displayed on the screen. In some cases, pressing the
SHUTDOWN: restart button may not clear the problem. This would typically be caused by
an interaction with the power supply which does not fully shut down during
a restart. It is recommended that if a customer experiences a restart banner
that does not clear itself when they press RESTART, they should power
down the system using the ON/OFF button. This may completely solve the
problem and avoid an on-site call.

APPENDIX A
USB Field Guidance Document
HD15, CX50, iE33/iU22 (Vision 2009)
The following tips apply for the most part to all USB devices and all ultrasound systems. There are
specific exceptions, and those exceptions are noted in the text and tables below.
• You can use USB storage devices as removable media for the same tasks that you use DVDs or
CDs. This includes importing and exporting DICOM still images and loops; importing and
exporting OB trending documents; importing and exporting studies; and exporting JPEG
and AVI images and structured report documents. You can also use them to back-up
system settings/presets and download error logs.
• Many USB hard drives do not fully comply with the USB 2.0 specification and require more power
(the maximum current draw in USB 2.0 standard is 500 mAmps). There are limitations for
the various ultrasound USB ports such as the need for a special “Y” USB cable. Refer to
the table at the end of this document.
• Philips does not recommend the use of USB hard drives which require external AC power. It is
not recommended to use USB hubs. Plugging a USB drive into an off-cart power source
can compromise the electrical safety of the system and may require an isolated power
source.
• While other USB devices may operate, Philips has tested and recommends specific USB
devices. See table at the end of this document.
• When USB memory devices are used to save patient images on the HD15 and CX50, the system
will change the memory device name! For example, a USB memory stick that has a name
“Kingston” will have its name changed to something like “3_074_07_05” every time an
image is saved to this device. This might confuse the user.
• USB devices, when inserted into a USB port, are automatically assigned a drive letter; exactly
which drive letter varies by system. You can connect multiple USB storage devices at one
time, but you cannot export to or import from multiple devices or types of devices
simultaneously. You must select the device and then perform the action.
• Customers should use care when using USB memory devices which have been used with other
computers. They could contain viruses.
• When using a USB cable from any USB port on the cart to connect to the USB device, note that
shorter cable lengths are preferred over longer cable lengths.
• Customers & FSEs should not back-up more than one version of system settings, configurations,
or presets to the same USB device on the HD15 and CX15. These two systems cannot
differentiate one set of files from another set of HD15/CX50 files. iE33/iU22 is not impacted.
• Use caution when unplugging a USB drive from the USB port to ensure that the writing process is
complete. Depending on what tasks the system is performing, there may be a delay before
the writing process starts. Premature removal could result in file damage. Many USB
devices have an LED that indicates writing status. We recommend using a device that has
a status indicator and wait several seconds after the indicator light has gone off before
disconnecting the media.

LICENSED AND IS ONLY FOR THE USE OF PHILIPS PERSONNEL AND LICENSED REPRESENTATIVES. IT IS NOT TO BE
DISTRIBUTED, SHARED, COPIED, TRANSFERRED OR OTHERWISE PROVIDED TO ANYONE ELSE ELECTRONICALLY OR

• USB memory sticks are not a recommended long term archive solution.
• Most flash drives (i.e. memory sticks) fully comply with the USB 2.0 specification and do not
require the use of the two-headed ‘Y’ cable.
• Some USB memory sticks are sold with a “U3” smart technology installed. In general, having this
application on the memory device should not interfere with the system, but it is
recommended good practice to remove U3. These devices when plugged into a personal
computer may launch utilities that are confusing to the user. The best way to avoid
interference with these utilities is to format the USB device. USB connectors can
malfunction if dirty or corroded. Always inspect the USB plug before inserting in the USB
socket.
• As a general rule, ensure that when you send data or retrieve data from the USB device that the
status light is working.
