Ict 6

The document outlines the color coding and wiring sequences for Ethernet cables, specifically straight-through and crossover types, which are essential for networking. It explains the purpose of different colored cables and their applications, such as standard connections, crossover connections, and Power over Internet. Additionally, it provides definitions for RJ-45 and CAT5/6 cables.

1. Drills/Activity:
1. Name the wire colors in correct order in terminal A and B of straight-through and cross- over cables.
2. Memorize the colors assigned to each terminal for both cables.

What do different colored Ethernet cables mean?

Which type of cable is commonly used to connect between a modem and a laptop? Is it
straight-through or cross-over? Why?

COPPER CABLE SPLICING AND TESTING

Ethernet cable color-coded wiring sequences exist as a cabling industry

standard. It allows cabling technician to predict how Ethernet cable is
terminated on both ends so they can follow other technician’s work.
Ethernet cables are commonly used in computer networking. They are used
when we connect our router to the modem or when we desire to share data
and access to the internet via wired network.

ETHERNET CABLE COLORS AND ITS MEANING:

1. Gray Ethernet- standard Ethernet connection
found in residential and commercial
networks/jumpers.
2. Green Ethernet- used to classify a cross- over
connection, which are used to connect two different
computers/devices directly together.
3. Yellow Ethernet- used for Power over internet
connection/ wired security camera.
4. Blue Ethernet- used for terminal server connections/denotes network
connectivity.
5. Black- used for equipment.
6. Red Ethernet- used for VoIP phone systems or other emergency
communications systems.

Two types of LAN cables:

1. Straight-through refers to cables that have the pin assignments on each end
of the cable. Pin 1 connector A goes to pin 1 connector B., Pin 2 to Pin 2 until all
colors are connected. This cable is most commonly used to connect a host to
client.

2. Crossover
wired cables
(commonly
called
crossover
cables) are
very much like
straight-through cables with the
exception that lines are crossed (they are at opposite positions on either end of
the cable).

Pin 1 on connector A goes to Pin 3 on connector B. Pin 2 in connector A goes to

Pin 6 in connector b.
Crossover cables are most commonly used t o connect two hosts directly.

Vocabulary:
RJ – 45 =Registered Jack. is a standardized network interface used for network
cabling, wiring and jack construction.(https://www.techopedia.com)
CAT5/6 = Category 5/6. is a twisted pair cable for computer networks.
