INTRODUCTION
Modern people increasingly seek to transform their daily routines to become less harmful to the
environment. This is a sector where this is gradually becoming essential in the context of products such as
dish washing soap. Most of the readily available detergents are synthesized using chemicals that are
unfriendly to our skin and the environment. This has brought a good demand for natural remedies that are
efficient and gentle to the skin.
This research work is on the possibility of employing two local organic materials, Okra
(Abelmoschus esculentus) and Philippine lime (Citrus × microcarpa), to prepare a home-made dish
washing soap. Okra’s main ingredient is well-known for its thick slimy matter which can effectively aid
in eradicating the grease and the grime, on the other hand, Philippine lime is not only famous for its fresh
citrusy smell and its natural acidity but can enhance the cleaning power and has antibacterial qualities.
That is why in creating this dishwashing liquid, we integrate the two active ingredients in an
effort to get a dishwashing liquid that is effective in removing grease and dirt without being harsh to our
environment. This research work will therefore aim at establishing the effectiveness of this natural blend
in cleaning dishes, the level of safeness to be used frequently and the impression it has on natural
resources. Thus, they are acting as a more sustainable way of cleaning for everyday use that is very much
in tune with the current global trend.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Cleaning agents in different types of soap and disinfectant like alcohol are on demand in different
sectors of the world even in every household to secure the safety of everyone. Hence, the prices of this
cleaning agents and materials are hiking due to the demand globally. Goods and other materials that
needed is not accessible since our movements and freedom to go outside from our household is limited
that is why every person is challenged to be creative and innovative to the materials available around
them to supply their family and personal needs.
This is where the idea came from in making locally accessible dishwashing soap made by the
product that is well-known for its beneficial properties for the body and environmental uses especially in
killing bacteria that can cause viruses. Okra and Calamansi is one of the natural resources used for many
reasons due to its cleaning and healing properties, okra caught the attention of the researcher due to its
slimy components that can be innovate into dishwashing liquid with the twist of Philippine lime
(Kalamansi) extract to strengthen their ability to prevent viruses from our dirty kitchen utensils and plates.
RRLs
Marlyn Walker (2021) claims that bacteria or germs are everywhere including your kitchen,
where food is stored, prepared, and eaten. Bacteria may cause illnesses that can be on your food, kitchen
utensils, counters, appliances, floors, pets, and especially your hands. Perhaps, washing kitchen utensils is
one of the highlighted parts of the chores since its hold a crucial responsibility to the lives of everyone by
giving its part as daily meal serving holder of a family.
Andersen (2022) cited "Whether soap comes in a bar or in a liquid form, they are both equally
effective at reducing pathogens and removing dirt," says Rachel Burns, MD. However, it depends on what
you personally need on a certain product since liquid soap can be less contaminated rather than bar soap.
Dana White M.S., R.D., (2020) state that bar soap is basically made from a combo fats, oils and
perfumes that build together to come up with a substance that have the ability to (when wet) capture and
take over dirt and germs. Liquid hand soaps are technically detergents, meaning they share the cleansing
properties of soap but don't react with the minerals in strong water and are less likely to leave a soap
follicle or scum behind.
Grove Collaborative (2021) noted that natural surfactants derived from plants are used to enhance
the cleaning power of soap which works by lowering the surface tension of water helping the soap
molecules grab onto dirt and grease.
According to Dipu, D. (2023), "The primary purpose of dishwashing liquid is to clean dirty
dishes, and a pleasant fragrance help to mask any unpleasant odors that may be present. Many people
associate dishwashing liquid with cleanliness, so using a good scented product can help to reinforce the
feeling of cleanliness and hygiene.
Ignite Cleaners (2022) stated that, "Degreasers are cleaning products that are used to remove
grease, oil, and grime from surfaces. Dishwashing liquids in particular are good degreasers designed to
break down and remove grease from dishes. It is usually made of surfactants (From Okra mucilage)
which are compounds that the lower the surface tension of water allowing it to penetrate grease and
grime." They also added that, "The acids in citrus fruits (also found in Philippine Lime) can be used to
break down grease and grime.
OBJECTIVES
The three objectives of this study are:
The purpose of this study is to determine the degree of cleanliness that the dishwashing liquid
containing Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) and Philippine lime (Citrus × microcarpa) and to compare it to
the commonly marketed dishwashing liquid.
To evaluate the extent to which the natural dishwashing liquid affects the environment as well as
its degree of biodegradability to ascertain it is a green substitute to chemical products
. To determine the safety and efficacy of the dishwashing liquid that employs Okra and Philippine
lime in flushing and removing germs from dishes focusing on skin sensitization and all-round experience
while using it.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of; okra Abelmoschus esculentus and
Philippine lime (Citrus x microcarpa) in cleaning activities and their effectiveness to perform its function
of being incorporated to dish washing soap naturally. This research will seek to find out the efficiency of
these products in washing the dishes together with the effects on the environment and health with regard
to the commercial products. Hence with concern to such natural treatments, the study intends to come up
with an environmentally friendly or non-lethal solution towards the advocated improved and sustainable
state of health amongst people. In addition, it endeavors to obtain locally recyclable materials for raw
material that is bicycle- riding friendly and renewable of natural resources of the countryside.
