4. Is it possible to use the oscilloscope as amultimeter?

Project-3 Maintain and Repair microwave ovens
1. What is the function of high voltage diode?
2. Explain the working principle of microwave oven
3. What if the microwave oven is totally dead? What are the possible causes?
4. How to check the functionality of a magnetron?

Answers for project 1

1. 5volt
2. Input, rectifier, filter and regulator
3. Filter
Answers for project 2
1. A signal generator is an electronic device that generates either analog or digital electronic signals. The signal produced by a signal
generator can be calibrated according to user specifications and adjusted on the basis of its frequency, impedance, waveform, modulation,
and output voltage.
2. An oscilloscope is an instrument that graphically displays electrical signals and shows how those signals change over time.
3. Signal generators produce alternating currents (and voltages) or AC and signal generators play the role of batteries for AC
circuits. Oscilloscopes are basically voltmeters to measure alternating voltages.
4. Yes…. We can measure voltage, frequency, and also continuity using oscilloscope.

Answers for project 3

1. The microwave diode part converts the alternating current (AC) power output of the transformer to direct current (DC), doubling the
voltage to nearly 5,000 volts. This high voltage powers the magnetron to heat the food or beverage placed in the oven cavity.
2. A microwave oven or simply microwave is an electric oven that heats and cooks food by exposing it to electromagnetic radiation in the
microwave frequency range. This induces polar molecules in the food to rotate and produce thermal energy in a process known as
dielectric heating.
3. Probable causes will be:
 Blown fuse
 Open thermal fuse
 Defective controller or its power supply
4. If the resistance stays below 1 ohm, then the electric filament inside the magnetron functions properly. If you get a higher reading or if the
screen reads “OL”, then the magnetron is faulty and should be replaced.

per division (2v/d). (Use the wave given above).
 Task 3: calculate period and frequency if the X scale is set to 5ms per division. (Use the
wave given above).
Project-3 Maintain and Repair microwave ovens
Project description: this project involves maintaining and repairing a microwave oven so that
microwave oven as selected by the assessor is usually NO heat food, but gives normal operation.
Instruction: Under this project the candidate is expected to perform the tasks based on the
information provided.
 Task 1- disassemble the unit following correct procedures and demonstrate the functional
parts and working principle of the microwave oven to the assessor.
 Task 2- identify and locate the cause of the problem
