Medieval Monks and Nuns Vocabulary List
1. Monk – A man who dedicates his life to religion and lives in a monastery.
2. Nun – A woman who dedicates her life to religion and lives in a convent.
3. Monastery – A special place where monks live, pray, and work.
4. Convent – A special place where nuns live, pray, and work.
5. Abbey – A large monastery or convent, often led by an abbot or abbess.
6. Abbot – The leader of a monastery.
7. Abbess – The leader of a convent.
8. Priest – A religious leader who leads church services.
9. Cloister – A covered walkway in a monastery or convent where monks and nuns
walk
and pray.
10. Scriptorium – A special room where monks copy and decorate books by hand.
11. Manuscript – A book written by hand, often decorated with beautiful designs.

12. Illuminated manuscript – A book with colourful pictures and gold decorations.
13. Vow – A serious promise made to God, such as a vow of poverty or silence.
14. Poverty – Having no personal money or belongings, as many monks and nuns do.
15. Obedience – A vow to follow the rules of the monastery or convent.
16. Silence – Some monks and nuns take a vow of silence and speak only when
necessary.
17. Habit – The special clothing worn by monks and nuns.
18. Hood / Cowl – A part of the habit that covers the head.
19. Tonsure – A special haircut with a shaved top, often worn by monks.
20. Pilgrimage – A journey to a holy place for religious reasons.
21. Consecrated – Made holy or dedicated to a religious purpose.
22. Alms – Money or food given to the poor by monks and nuns.
23. Hospitality – Welcoming travellers and the poor into the monastery for food and
shelter.
24. Monastic Order – A group of monks or nuns who follow the same rules (e.g.,
Benedictines, Franciscans).
25. Dowry – Money or property given by a woman’s family when she becomes a nun or
gets married.
