Transmission Systems

The transmission system transfers power from the engine to the car's wheels, enabling movement through a series of components that utilize the lever principle. There are two main types of transmissions: manual, which requires the driver to change gears using a clutch, and automatic, which operates without a clutch pedal or manual gear changes. Both types achieve the same goal of power transfer but utilize different mechanisms to do so.

Transmission systems.

Fig. Transmission.

The transmission system is responsible for transferring the power generated by the engine

to the car's wheels so that the car can move forward. The driveline provides the necessary

power to the car's drive wheels to enable them to function.

The transfer of power to the car's wheels is made possible by a series of components that

transfer power from the crankshaft to the wheels so that they can turn.

How does this work?

Fig. Lever principle.

This system is based on the lever principle, which allows a smaller force to be used to move

a considerable weight using a given lever and a given fulcrum.

The transmission system works on this principle: it uses gears of different sizes to connect

and transmit the movement produced by the engine to the wheels, balancing its speed and

torque (force/power of movement) according to the vehicle's needs on the road.

The way in which this is done varies greatly depending on the type of transmission, but the

principle is the same, and although there are several types, there are only two main types:

manual and automatic.

How Does a Manual Transmission Work?

Fig. Manual Transmission.

Manual transmissions require the driver to manually change gears using a clutch pedal and

a shifter. These types of transmissions consist of a set of gears along a pair of shafts, called

the input and output shafts.

With a manual transmission, the driver must select the proper gear and engage or disengage

the clutch. The transmission uses a flywheel, pressure plate and clutch to engage and

disengage the engine from the transmission.

The flywheel and pressure plate are connected to the engine. The clutch is sandwiched

between them and is splined to the transmission input shaft. The act of “pushing in the

clutch” releases the pressure plate, which disengages the clutch from the engine. Every time

you make a shift, you have to push in the clutch first.

How does an automatic transmission work?

If you have ever driven a car with an automatic transmission, you will know that there are

two big differences between an automatic transmission and a manual transmission:

1. There is no clutch pedal in an automatic car.

2. There is no gear change in an automatic car. Once you put the transmission in drive,

everything else is automatic.

Both an automatic transmission (with its torque converter) and a manual transmission (with

its clutch) do exactly the same thing, but they do it in completely different ways. It turns

out that the way an automatic does it is absolutely amazing!
