The Apostles Creed

We may have noticed at Mass that we used the Apostles Creed instead of the Nicene Creed. The origins of the Apostles Creed are believed to predate the Nicene Creed. It is universally recognized by many Christians as a shared statement of our faith in God the father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Apostles Creed may be used at any Sunday Mass, but the church particularly recommends its use during Lent and Easter Time. Why? Because the words of this ancient Creed have been used for centuries as the basis of our baptismal promises, and the seasons of Lent and Easter put a strong focus on baptism. During Lent we prepare those who will be baptized at Easter while readying ourselves to renew our own baptismal promises. As we recite the Apostles Creed, it will stir up in our hearts our commitment to Christ which was first made at our own baptism and prepare us to renew our promises this Easter

Questions and Answers from the Catholic Bishops of ew Jersey

Marriage as a Union of One Man and One Woman January 17, 2012
Is same sex marriage a civil right? Same sex marriage is not a civil right. A strong desire does not make a civil right. Every man and every woman has a right to enter into marriage, but marriage as an institution can only be between a man and a woman. Governments do not have the power to define marriage otherwise, because it is a permanent human institution that does not owe its existence to governments. In addition, sane-sex marriage is not a civil right because same-sex couples cannot fulfill the core public purpose of marriage: bringing men and women into the only kind of union that can make new life and give children, mothers and fathers.

PARISH-WIDE LENTEN PROJECT

As a young boy walked the beach at dawn, he noticed an old man ahead of him picking up starfish and tossing them into the sea. Catching up with the man, the boy asked why he was doing this. The old man explained to the boy that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun. But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish, exclaimed the boy. How can your effort make any difference? The old man looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it safely into the waves. He turned to the boy and said, It made a difference to that one.
