Oceans Answers

1. What percentage of the Earth’s surface is covered by land?

30%

2. Give two ways that producers support other organisms.

Any two from:

• provide food
• provide protection from predators
• provide a safe place for animals to breed
• provide a safe place for animals to raise young

3. Explain why it is important for fish to reach maturity before they are caught for food.

If fish are caught before they reach maturity, then they will not yet have had time to breed. This
means that fish stocks cannot be replenished and will decline.

4. Explain how the ocean water helps to limit global warming.

The water absorbs carbon dioxide, which reduces the amount of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere. This reduces global warming.

5. Explain why coral bleaching is a problem.

Coral bleaching is the release of algae from coral, which causes it to turn white and die. Coral
provides an important ecosystem for many ocean organisms. If coral is lost, then these organisms
will lose their shelter and food and may also die.

6. Suggest how governments can act to protect ocean habitats.

Governments can create Marine Protected Areas around their country’s coastline to protect marine
organisms from overfishing.
Governments can collaborate to ensure that international waters are protected from overfishing,
mining, shipping and pollution.
Governments can set fishing quotas that prevent overfishing.
Governments can set laws on net size to prevent small fish being caught.

7. Suggest one way that individuals can reduce the amount of plastic in oceans.

Any one from:

• reduce their use of single-use plastic
• recycle plastic waste so that less plastic ends up in the oceans
• collect litter to prevent it being washed into water which will carry it to the sea
