Case Study Assignment #2

Purpose: This assignment is the second of two that will contribute towards your final project
in the module. In Unit 1, we discussed the four phases of Development Communication’s
methodological framework:

In this assignment you will focus on Phase Two: Strategy Design. In this assignment, you
will focus on the Communication Approaches and Messages that could be implemented to
address the needs of the community in your case study from Assignment 1.

NB: You are not allowed to switch case studies. The case study you used for Assignment 1 is
the one you will work with for the remainder of the semester.
Your Analysis

Once you have selected your case study and have read up on Health Communication
Theories and Health Campaigns/Interventions (Units 3 and 5), you will then write a short
essay in which you provide an Campaign/Intervention Strategy for your case study.

I. Introduction (1 paragraph) –

In this section, you will provide a brief overview of the background of the
development issue. This will not be as detailed as the introduction of Assignment 1.
Essentially, you are reminding your reader about what the problem is, and explaining
what you will do in this essay (preview statement).

II. Body (2 pages)- Campaign/Intervention Strategy

In this section you will use the concepts from Units 3 and 5 to provide the full scope
of your strategy to address the issue in your case study. You should include the
following variables in your analysis:
- Campaign vs Intervention – Defend your choice
- Specifics of your strategy (what you plan to do and why)
- Special Considerations for Mass Media Campaigns/Community-Based
Interventions (whichever you decided to use for your strategy)
o During: Design, Implementation, Evaluation
- Application of one of the Health Communication theories:
o Explain the key components of the theory in your own words
o Explain how it is applicable to the case study
o How can it be implemented into your campaign/intervention strategy?

III. Conclusion (1 paragraph) -

In this section you will conclude your essay, making closing thoughts and
summarizing the main points of your analysis.

Format of the assignment:

Your assignment must be submitted on Blackboard as a typed document.

Clearly indicate the title as well as your Student number at the beginning of the paper.

Write roughly 2 ½ -3 pages (size 12 font), 1.5 spacing

Your essay should have an introduction, body, and a conclusion

You have to write in full sentences and in paragraphs.

You do not need a reference list for this assignment.


Direct copying from the slides, textbook, or articles will be penalised. You will submit your
assignments through Turnitin. You do not need to worry about Similarity “hits” that are
linked to your headings. Instances of direct copying will result in a significant reduction in
your mark. You will have a practice submission link to allow you to check your similarity
score prior to your final submission. AI generated work will automatically result in a zero
for the assignment.

NB: This is an individual assignment. Students caught copying each other’s work or
submitting work that is not their own will receive a zero.
