Based on your activity you performed, what It’s all about polynomial
do you think is our lesson?

Directions: The teacher will discussed the

topic.
Polynomial- come to a Greek word

Poly - “many”

nomial- “name”

- is a special kind of algebraic expression

consisting of one or more terms, where each
term is constant, variable or a product of
constants (coefficient) and variables raised to a
non-negative integer exponent.

Key Conditions for a Polynomial

1. Exponents must be whole numbers (0 or

positive integers).

 ✓ x 3 + 2x - 5 (valid)

 ❌ x −2 + 3x + 1 (invalid, negative
exponent)

 ❌ x 1.5 + 2x - 5

2. Variables must not appear in the denominator

or under a radical.

 ✓ 4 x 2 + 3x + 7 (valid)

4 4 1
 ✓ x - x + 6 (valid)
3 2

1
 ❌ + x 2 (invalid, variable in
x
denominator)

 ❌ √ x + 2x - 1 (invalid, variable under a

root)

3. Coefficients can be any real number (integers,

fractions, or decimals)

 ❌ (√ −5) x 2 + x - 1

 ❌ (2 + i) x 4 - 3x + 7

Polynomials Form & Degree

Polynomial Standard Form

a n x + a n −1 x +… + a 2 x + a 1 x +a0
n n −1 2

“The exponent is in decreasing”

Degree

The degree of a term is the exponent of

its variable while the degree of the polynomial
is the highest degree appearing in any of the
terms in that polynomial.

 5 x 2 + 3x + 7 → degree = 2

 x 3 + 4 x 2- x → degree= 3

 2 x 4 + x 2 + 1 → degree=4

Degree

If a term consists of two or more variables,

the degree of a term is the sum of the exponents
of the variables.
